yeah, so i was at my cousins house in oregon during the summer, and we combined all of our cds onto his computer, and then i synced my ipod with his computer(whatever that means) , and went on my way. now, i’m back in colorado, and i got a new rush cd, and wanted to put it the ipod. to do this though, the computer needs to delete all the songs that are on there now, so, i was wondering if anyone knew a way around this. (the ipod still has room on it. )
You could try getting a non-fascist mp3 player.
Turn on itunes and before you plug the pod in set it to manually transfer files. I can’t remember the exact way to do it but you can.
It’s also useful to have manual file transfer if your ipod has a bigger hard drive than your computer, like mine does. I have over 20 gigs of music on my ipod, but I hardly keep any on itunes to avoid using all my hard drive space.
Actually I think you might have to plug the ipod in first, but you better make sure of that before you try it!
You don’t have to plug your ipod in first.
But manual song control is the way to go. Alot nicer in my opinion.
any idea how to do that?
It’s under Preferences, then under Ipod at the top.
Welcome to the world of iPod ownership. The idea with iTunes is that your music lives on your computer, and your iPod carries a copy of it. You left “your” computer in Oregon. Things may have changed since the last time I dealt with any of this, but Apple doesn’t intend for music files to go downstream from your iPod, only upstream to it. You have to use someone else’s software. There were one or more free utilities for this a few years ago when I was first organizing iPod stuff. One is called PodUtil, though I don’t know if it’s still around. You’re going to have to do a little research for this to work.
I never heard of “Manually Transfering Files” with iPods. You can set it for disk use, which means the unused portion of the storage can be used like an external drive, but this is separate from your music.
Start by looking for software to copy the songs off the iPod and onto your computer, then take it from there.
Good luck!
you can move the songs from your ipod to computer with SharePod. I use it and its great, very easy to use.
that would work, but i have a mac
Manual transfer just means that you drag-and-drop songs from Itunes to your Ipod instead of Itunes transferring everything automatically. It’s separate from the external drive features.
I’m going to have to check out that Sharepod thing, there are a few albums on my ipod that I’d like to have elsewhere too.
it would still work
you just DL it then you put the program on your ipod
or there’s ‘‘ephpod’’ - another program to transer from ipod-computer (search download.com to find it, it’s freeware)
Unfortunately it appears to be for Windows only. It does not actually run on the iPod but uses your PC to access the files on there. I’m sure there is something similar out there for Macs. Have you done any searching on your own yet?
hey, so i did find somthing here http://www.longfingers.com/ipodfolder/, which works for windows and osx, and so yeah, all is good:)
