IP Trackers Discussion

Ok there are like 1000 different ip trackers out there but which one is the most accurate?

depends on what detail you like to track.

if ur jsut looking for IP than theres really no specific one…

like the area they live.

At unicycle.net’s routers we operate an own AS. We can say an IP is based in Amsterdam, and still use NAT’ing or just PPP (like over POTS/PSTN, ISDN) or PPTP to bring the IP up totaly somewhere else (without a way for you to discover). And end users could use these protocols to. And in reality some of our IP’s go over ADSL networks to other places. I even can hang those IP’s on my GSM/PDA, it wont tell you where in world I am. And once iPod’s support WiFi I will hang one on it to (with as PTR ipod.unicycle.net!).

Asigned IP ranges can be seperated from AS, or asigned to multiple ASN’s. Does any tracker keep that in mind?

Or kind of opposit; you can use BGP to have a 1 IP attached to multiple hosts. 192.5.5.241 for example is based at 40 locations. A friend of me operates K with also many nodes.

Not to mention that even entire ASN’s are hijacked, and nobody knows who’s responsible. Some transits filter, other carriers don’t. Still there are bogus IP’s that reach other internet users.

In other words, what’s the sense of tracking IP's (and especially the location)?
