This blog post makes me kind of sad.
I know they’re completely different beasts but I’d really like to see the day where people see the value in running Linux instead of the boat-anchor alternative.

<posted from Windows, but only because I’ve been doing some digital artwork, and I’m too lazy to set up all of that artsy software on the Linux partition of my computer even though it would probably only take me about an hour>
EDIT: wooo, 69 posts
I don’t think that this day will really come anytime soon, because Linux isn’t for everyone. Why should somebody using the computer simply for Email, Web browsing or word documents switch to Linux, when Windows is fine for that?
That said, I’m using a windows computer right now, but my laptop is run under Ubuntu.
The article says iPad but your thread title says iOS. I think if you included the iPhones and iPod Touches, Linux got passed a long time ago.
Hmmm. Average computer user + Linux? Average computer user + iPad? I wonder why the one is more popular than the other? Or is there an easy-to-use Linux tablet on the market?
The article also surprised me with the high percentage of OS X users. I will start to worry if that segment gets too big; then all the malware writers will start crapping up Macs like they’ve been doing to PCs for years now…
Posted from OS X, running on top of Unix.
I think the Ipad should be compared to android tablets, and not Linux. They are used for two different things.
This is a good reason for others to stick to PCs, let them have all the users, but also all the problems…
Is there a Linux tablet? If not, I don’t really understand the OP’s point. iPads are boat anchors compared to what? Android tablets seem to be up-and-coming, but there’s still a huge gap between them and the iPad. Not so much for the phones though. My company now has some Samsung Epics (Sprint Network), and they’re very slick.
That’s right! Stick to those PCs, everybody!
That’s why I’m running Debian Gnu/Linux, all the simple stuff is now automatic, has been for a few years. And of course it’s free and I like being careful with money.
Android has a modified Linux kernel under the hood. The modifications are slowly trickling back upstream to Linus’ kernel.org kernel.
Other Linux based systems in common consumer devices:
Isn’t this a bit of splitting hairs?
Linux is a kernel, not an operating system. The Android OS runs on a Linux kernel, so if you are browsing on an Android, you are browsing on Linux. Most Linux distributions that I’m aware of are POSIX compliant, just like BSD, which is the basis for the OSX kernel. So, you could say that the world is moving towards the faster, more efficient end that Linux users have been foretelling for the last 15+ years.
This looks like good news generally, unless you just don’t want Apple to have the market share.
If the Commodore 64 had had a browser, it would have been #1 in this comparison, even today.
Oops, never mind. Wow. Holy wow.
Luddite.
Is that yours? Did you post from it? I have a circular slide rule but it’s not as nice as the one you have pictured there. You seem about 10 or 12 years too young to know how to use that.
If I had a R (okay, $) for everytime a girl said that…
There, Dave, fixed it for you.
Note that the samples are not taken from all over the internet, but probably from a limited number of participating sites.
A lot of very popular online places, have a very different demography.
Yeah, try comparing sites like “SMARTPHONEfailzLUlz”
to sites like “This is a generic video game webcomic but it features lots of other nerdy things too so you should read it even if you’re tired of generic video game webcomics”
to sites like “POWER LIFTERS FORUM RRRRGGGGHHH”
to sites like “Teh majick digital tarrot card will tell you if he loves you or not maybe probably”
to sites like “Which pony is YOUR favorite? Fluttershy, you say? That’s not how you spell “Pinkie Pie,” silly!”
Don’t forget slashdot or bash.org.
I always forget those; I’ve never even visited them. I have heard of them/am familiar with what they are, though.
Since we’re talking about such sites, I suspect that there are fewer Macs on 4chan.
I wonder did they take the Map of Online Communities into account?
