International Harper Day, 2011

The IHD ride on the IHT is set for Sunday, 28 August. Coincidentally, it’s on my 59th birthday.

All are welcome to attend. This is a fantastic route on a rails-to-trails conversion. The ride starts with a pitch black, 2.25 mile long tunnel. It proceeds for about 25 miles on a constant 2% downhill grade to Rattlesnake Lake Park. The trail crosses three railroad trestles each elevated about 100 feet with spectacular views. On this ride you pedal to maintain balance and that’s about all.

God created the Coker to do this ride.

Historically, I have taken bicycles up in my truck with the Cokers. I will not be doing that this year. Bicycles are an incredible pain and take up an enormous amount of room. If you want to go on the ride on a bicycle, ride it up to the top or find some way to transport it.

Be there or be square.

I ain’t square.

I don’t do birthdays …

It’s not a birthday, it’s an International Holiday. If you’re scared of the dark, I’ll lend you my maxi-mag light for the tunnel. Doubles as a weapon, in case Sasquatch drops down from up above.

The dark is my friend …

I worked for eight years in an unground gold mine and another year and a half in an underground power house. I know what being under 1800 meters of rock feels like when the cap lamps go dark.
The dark and I are old friends.

Last weekend I rode over Sasquatch tracks several times on the North Cascade crossing near Diablo. Always tracks but never any scat.

Looks like I will probably make it! If so, I’ll meet you at Rattlesnake Lake. What time do you expect to be at Rattlesnake?

We will meet at the Issaquah Park and Ride at 10:00AM. We’ll do some unicycle and people shuffling there. Then we’ll go straight to Rattlesnake. Why don’t you PM me and we can exchange phone numbers. That way we’ll know if you’re there and how many vehicles we’ll need to bring. If you’re willing to be the shuttle vehicle at the end of the ride we’ll bring fewer cars from Issaquah.

I think my basement is going to flood that day.

Your basement always seems to choose convenient days on which to flood.

The roll call so far looks like:

Anyone I’ve missed?

I hope Flat Gild can attend.

We may have picked up a few more riders. The Arnold family is frequently represented on this ride and Scott is going to try to again make it up with his son, Luke, this year. Also, a friend of my son has expressed an interest in attending and DeKoekkoek has already consented to loaning his Coker to him.

Pass the word to anyone I might have missed.

Harper Day

JD Miller won’t be making it to Harper Day this year. I promised to lead a club bike ride that day.

I hope there will be at least a hundred more Harper Day celebrations.

Oh he’ll be there, alright, along with several of his flatmates.

Count me in

I am planning to do this ride also. Sounds fun

Cool, Kevin, and with a big truck, too. Glad you can make it.

We may have 16 riders this year. This is a big group. We will be a presence, or an imposition, or a menace. I think Tom will bring along quite a few flat riders, too.

I also have a spare 36" Coker if someone has need of it, and two 29" if that might work for someone that wants to go.

One day…

Wow. Fantastic ride today. We had 14 unicyclists and then were joined by a guy on a 26" MUni just before we entered the tunnel. My only photos were taken with my phone and suck. Here are two, first Noli coming out of the tunnel just after Miles and I emerged.

This is one of JC followed by Dave Elliott. The rest are too blurry. This year we had a bike-free ride. Outstanding.

Finally, you expect a guy like Kevin Williams who has ridden the STP to show up as a blur. Hopefully some others will post their photos.
