In need of good "beach music"

Recently, I’ve developed a need to listen to some good beach music (as Wiki names it) and I was hoping you would know some good artists or compilations. I’m looking for something like this:

Beach music title just makes me think of The Beach Boys.

The Beach Boys are not as “beach” as I want them to be:D

One of the “pioneers” of the beach music sound was Dick Dale There were many more of that ear of the early 60’s, such as the Ventures, who became well known for their “Hawaii five 0” theme. Most of these were instrumental groups. The Chantays was another great group and their instrumental “Pipeline” was written specifically about surfing. And other than the Beach Boys, who were, are are universally known and loved the world over for their unique beach music, with most of the greatest songs written by the true musical genius Brian Wilson. Then there was Jan & Dean. They had several hits in the 60’s as well, inclusing “Surf City” which was a HUGE hit and sounds very much like the Beach Boys style.

jack johnson
paul wright (particularly the song “walking on water”)
bob schneider? (some ppl yes, some ppl no)

Dang edit time ran out… Anyway, “Surf City” was the first surf song to become number one in 1963, and was written by Brian Wilson, which is why it sounds like a beach boys song.

I knew I’ll get something from this forum:D
Thanks

Saw a great Band here locally…the AguaSonics. pure instrumental surf-music.
Imigine the opening riff in “Wipeout” (?) for two hours.
Good stuff.

There’s Daikaiju, from Alabama. One of their songs is used as the theme music music for Escape Pod science fiction podcast. Really good fiction, although they haven’t taken any of mine yet.

Several years ago I was looking for surf music for a parade our uni group was riding in. I picked up a Dick Dale CD and found it has the most rockin’ verson of Pipeline with the help of Stevie Ray Vaughan. It was recorded for a Frankie and Annette movie called “Back to the Beach”.

If you ever get a chance to hear that version it is worth the search.

Yes, but whatever you do, people, please do not play music on the beach. It disturbs those of us who wish not to hear it.

Try the Ventures. Very 60’s beachy.

And yeah, you don’t need to play it at the beach because you’re already there.

I know Long Island’s beaches have music-free areas, so maybe that’s what uni57 should look for. This month you can have huge amounts of beach all to yourself!

Surf-pop-punky-music = Surf Punks
(a must listen)

hardcore-punk-surf-music = Butthole Surfers.
(don’t bother)

I would suggest the motion picture soundtrack for “Shag” for some good Southeastern US beach music…

  1. The Shag - Page, Tommy
  2. I’m in Love Again - Domino, Fats
  3. Our Day Will Come - Hilliard, Bob
  4. Ready to Go Steady - Poley
  5. Shaggin’ on the Grandstand - Bollard
  6. Oh, What a Night - Junior, Marvin
  7. Saved - Leiber, Jerry
  8. I’m Leaving It All up to You - Harris, Don [1] Sug
  9. Surrender - Goffin, Louise
  10. Diddley Daddy - Diddley, Bo

Some are a bit newer, but still good beach music…

Of course the typical, Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, and Dick Dale are classics.

Dude, I would seriously ckeck out The Mermen. They’re a local instrumental surf band in my area. I’ve seen them a bunch of times and they rock!

I just got three albums by The Ventures. They’re great.
