In addition to unicycling

In addition to unicycling, what do some of you do? I write music for concert band. Here are a few of my tunes.

I like to skateboard. Freestyle, preferably. The balance aspect of freestyle skateboarding is one of the major reasons why I started unicycling.

Here is one of my skate videos. Check it out. You would be super cool if you did. :sunglasses:

(btw, the lens make my garage seem WAYYY bigger than it actually is)

That’s cool. I bet its a good workout. Its been years since I have been on a skateboard.

I figured even though I don’t own a uni, I’d post here.

I enjoy playing music (even if it isn’t that good…O.o).

Here are some of my recordings. :stuck_out_tongue: Hopefully your ears don’t bleed.

I also teach/learn a constructed language from a popular film (Na’vi from “Avatar”).

Lessee…I also juggle, yo-yo, solve Rubik’s cubes, and pretty much nothing else. xD

Yep. Boring ol’ me.

I enjoyed your music.

I enjoyed your music. I was a Junior High Band Director in a previous lifetime. (before retirement)

Hey Kelly, I enjoyed your musical compositions also. Reminds me of my band days (5th - 12th grade). How cute is the Red Panda!? Do you also unicycle? I need to get a new alto saxophone so I can start playing it while riding my unicycle again. The theme from “The Benny Hill Show” goes well on a unicycle.

Some nice skills there Cyco. I just recently built-up a new board and am working on some new tricks. I learned to skateboard in the 70’s, and I need to update my old-school skills! I am going to work on some of the same moves you showed in your video (although I don’t know the names of most of them).

Hey and thanks for the comments. I still play in band…I play tuba in the East Texas Symphonic Band and play at various conventions. I started riding unicycle(or rather falling of a unicycle) about a month ago. I bought a 20" and a 24". The farthest I have ridden so far is about 400 feet, but am getting better every day! Get you a sax and join a community band. you’ll have fun! Here are a few more of my tunes. I have written 56 marches and about a dozen or so concert pieces as well as some choral and orchestra stuff.

Quite Nice fkb!

What’s the story behind the Red Panda?
…and who did the art work… wood cuts, etc. ?

Also, did you take all of the pictures accompanying the music?
Just curious.

…and do you play in the Houston Symphonic Band? Direct it?

I was just checking back to see if I am listing the name of the band correctly (I am probably not), and I see that you have posted a couple of new videos.

You are a pretty busy, talented guy!
Way to go on taking up the unicycle, too!

Many of my marches are named for endangered animals. The Red Panda was my first one to write. Others are Blue Whale, Tiger Beetle, Red Wolf, Grey Wolf, Island Fox, Louisiana Black Bear, Brown Bear etc. Many are named for Civil War Events, places or people. I dont play in the Houston Symphonic Band, but they recorded Wind and Wing last year. I play in the East Texas Symphonic Band which is based in Longview, TX. Our venue is the Belcher Center which is a rally fine concert hall. They have performed a few of my pieces. Check out the Belcher!

Some of us? Which of us do you want to respond? I’ll assume you’re not interested in what I do, so I’ll hold my tongue.

I loved your compositions, fkb. I especially liked the Red Panda March. You’re talented.

Did you go to music school then? If so, where?

I started unicycling and then entered the world of circus… even though at first I was anti unicycle+circus.

So, I do circus mostly

Hi and thanks for the comments. I studied music at Lamar University in Beaumont, TX…graduated in 89 after years of chasing girls, playing pool, partying and occasionally attending classes! I never actually studied music composition, so I learned most of that by trial and error…mostly error. My main focus was music education. I ended up being a band director for 17 years and now I teach elementary music. I might go back to band directing soon. Publishers are starting to pick up some of this stuff, and every once in a while I hear about some band somewhere on the planet playing one of my tunes. That’s always cool. I haven’t quit my day job yet though.

Why were you anti unicycle+circus?

I didn’t really know what circus was, apart from Cirque du Soleil… So I was like unicycling in circus = clown = not unicycling.

Hey that’s cool, there are certainly non-clown acts that can use a unicycle!

Im active in bunch of jobs. I’m happiest as a children’s entertainer and I’m aiming to get into the school system soon. I haven’t used unicycling in my act though. For whatever reason, unicycling is for me more then entertaining others.

I’ve noticed that there’s a reasonably larger number of creative types in the unicycling. There’s probably a poll somewhere in the these pages.

Student Art Work

In addition to my recent obsession with unicycling, I teach High School art and Fine Arts Survey.

The works pictured here are multi media and found object sculptures.

Robot was created with computer parts and other mechanical equipment.

Iguana is made of shingle nails, buttons and beads which were nailed in place, so the nail heads became an important part of the work.

Jimi Hendrix was created with nails, screws, old jewelry, metal parts, and all sorts of other found objects. (Jimi Hendrix can also be seen on the wall to the right of the robot.)

These 3 pieces represented our high school in the district-wide parish show.
Needless to say, I am proud of the three students who created the sculptures!
They worked hard, and we all enjoyed the positive reactions during the exhibit.

Talented students. Are they planning on continuing with their art work after high school/college?

i don’t know, it seems less of a ‘what do some of you do?’ and more of a ‘look what i can do thread.’

Which, i must add, is very good.
