I'm getting there

Ok, so today i was out in the park again practicing riding. (and getting a lot of strange looks from people) and i’m getting there. today somethin just clicked a bit. and i was going usually between 10 and 15 foot.

15 foot… that’s 180 inches… that’s 457 cm… that’s… FOUR THOUSAND, FIVE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-TWO millimeters (it sounds good like that  )

I’m riding a 20" nimbus II, which i got for christmas and i’m loving every minute (and fall) of it.

Just to help me out though, when learning, is it better to ride slower (to have more control) because i seemed to ride quickly, because i guess my momentum was keeping me up?

Cheers,
Matt

Matt-

Keep crankin’. Way to go.

Keep your weight on the seat and try to focus slightly ahead of yourself…not right in front of the tire. Ride at any speed that you are able to stay upright. That speed differs for all people. Try to ride until you fall rather than chickening out and stepping off of the pedals.

If you stay on until you fall, you can actually drag the Uni down with you, covering more distance.

Cheers.

i’ll give it a go tomorrow morning, and let youse know how i do

i’m getting to know the park man quite well. he kept the park open for an extra half-hour for me today, which was nice of him. i think he was just enjoying watching me fall, but that’s not the point.
oh, and the old men who come to play bowls, but sit in the hut coz the green’s frosted over have been encouraging me (i think there’s a mars bar waiting for me when i learn how to ride ‘properly’)

anyways, time for bed

Cheers,
Matt

Good luck man! Keep practicing hard and it’ll come to you. I’ve been riding less than a month and I’m starting to get the hang of idling and hopping. My turning has improved dramatically with a new tire, and today I was able to hop a 180 in 2 or 3 hops which felt good. If only I could get a Miyata air seat with carbon fiber base…

Old men in huts offering you a mars bars… didn’t your mother teach
you anything?

Everyone knows its a minimum of three bars

It’s good that you’re not self-conscious of falling down in front of other
people. Anyway, when I first learned (in the range of Aug, Sept, Oct of
2001) how to ride a unicycle, I always felt helpless about the speed
issue. Most of the time I would take off a like rocket, but I never
could slow down UNTIL I could really ride the unicycle without
falling down. It’s was fustrating. However, there were a few
fleeting moments when I would actually control my speed to a slower
pace and that certainly help keep me upright. In my mind I would
repeat, “Go slow, go slow, go slow.” Going slower did seem easier
for me to control my blance.

Keep it up with the practice. Don’t give up, of course.
