If you thought unicycling was obscure...

…then you should check out the sport of wheel gymnastics. The wheel is actually two large hoops side-by-side and the rider is inside them. Kinda like a cross between a dicycle (2 side-by-side wheels) and a monocycle (a single wheel where the rider is inside the wheel). I guess you could call them duocycles, in uni-speak!

'Ave a look at http://www.rhoenrad.com - click on the Union Jack for the english version.

Also good photos on http://www.jcolles.btinternet.co.uk/torwood/ . Some unicyclists attended the wheel gymnastics world champs in Valencia earlier this year: http://www.jcolles.btinternet.co.uk/torwood/Valen2002/Wheeling/wheels.htm . Looks like there is some cross over between uni and gym wheeling!

It looks like someone already reached the wheel gymnastics equivalent of level 11;)

Have fun!

The Cirque du Soleil show, Quidam, starts with a very nice performance using this contraption. I have seen it in at least one other circus setting, but can’t remember where. It looks like a lot of fun, but it’s size and obvious limits as a means of transportation limit the settings in which it can be done.

I had the luck of being able to see this in action at its best a Quidam over the summer.

The circus term for the contraption is the german wheel. It is deffenatlly quite cool. I have only seen it in action at the one show, but It would be fun to learn.

Both my daughters who also ride unicycles have dabbled in wheel
gymnastics. It’s called “Rhönrad turnen” over here and we have a club
within a mile from where we live. I’ve seen live demonstrations on
various occasions.

At Eurocycle 2002, one of the Workshops on offer was on RhonRad ( seeminly
the german name for such a wheel) I had a go, found it rather hard and
disorietating, myeyes clench shut when I’m up-side down I discovered. Odd,
but fun . Yet another of those sports I think I could get into given the
time, kit and training.

A number of the German unicyclists have trained in RhonRad and are quite
good, Arne and Paul to name two.
