Hi, what’s the general concensus on crank length for a 20" rim?
Other than trials, what else is a good application for 20"? (other than learning on)

Tricks and its better for manuvering in tight areas at slow speeds.
I believe 5" is the standard for 20" unis

Performing on a stage. (You see I’m avoided the c***** word here.)

My el cheapo has 125s on it (5") and works well. Trials unis will have
like 145s on them (just shy of 6"). I’ve talked to a freestyle rider who’s
putting 102mm cranks on a 20" to make the ride less wobbly. I guess
shorter cranks make less side wobble.

Re: ‘ideal’ crank length for 20" rim?
I use 114’s ( roughtly 4.5") for freestyle, and on a monty type I use a
125mm.

Some have said that when you get married and have kids your life is over. I’d like to be on record to state that this statement is only partially true.
When your kids are just learning to walk they can’t go very fast and are kind of wobbly, unstable and not able to follow a straight line. It gets a little boring to walk with them at their speed and lack of direction. Bike riding is out of the question and even with rollerblading you’ll go too fast.
So the answer is to unicycle. The 20" is just the thing for slow speeds. It’ll do an about face within the width of a sidewalk with a standard sharp turn. You’ll pedal and not go very far. You can amuse yourself with one foot idling tricks while your kid discovers eating bugs from the neighbour’s tree. You’ll get in lots of hopping practice as well.
So for the sake of your future progeny, get a 20" and start learning those tricks. Your kid will be inspired in the future when s/he sees your really cool tricks.

Now that I think about it, I have gone out for a ‘walk’ with my wife several times!
Hey Don.tai, I just emailed Carl, and we’re gonna meet for the Don Valley trail on Sunday, April 28th around lunch or so (I’ll be able to set a firm time closer to the date) He said he’d try to round up a few others…you in?

20" unicycles rule for unicycle hockey.
right now I am using 114mm cranks but I am thinking about switching to 102’s to get a little more speed on the breakaways.

Anything over 145s are going to be too long. I have a set of 150s on my Trials Uni and they are way too long.
On my two 20" unicycles I use 125mm long cranks.

I never knew what size(s) of cranks we had in the house so I went to
the garage to measure. Jorga and Minke have 5" cranks on their 20"
unicycles. That’s how they were bought and the girls never complained.
But then, I think they’ve hardly considered the possibility of
retrofitting different cranks. (And I happen to have 5" cranks too, on
a 24".)

I just found two more uses for my 20"r.
2)I went out for an other idling lesson, and during which time, I saw two little girls playing hopskotch, and I impressed them by doing the whole thing on the first try (minus picking up the rock)
You have to do so much more to impress anyone on this board, maybe there’s a little girls’ hopskotch forum?
Nothing is more impressive to the people on this newsgroup than knowing you are interacting with children while on a unicycle. This is always considered good, positive exposure. For me that’s not always true…I fall off alot.

I’d be impressed if you did the picking up bit too.
actually I don’t think I could reliably hop all the numbers on a hopscotch
thing anyway

You’ve impressed me! Of course I’m assuming you did it properly, using
only one leg

Actually, picking up objects on the ground isn’t too hard; especially on
a 20". It might help to lower the seat post a little when practicing and
put it back up when you become proficient. I find it easiest to reach
down while pulling a brief standstill. With a little practice you should
be able to pick up objects with ease.

There was a survey recently that showed 50% of all web users were actually
FBI agents posing as teen-age girls.
