I live in Oklahoma City…and have been riding for one year now. Most of the time I ride at the Oklahoma City River trails …13 miles of 12ft. wide blacktop trails on both sides of the river section that run next to downtown. Most of the parking areas contain a Kris Holm blue sign that shows what recreational activities that are to take place on the trails. For instance a little icon of a person walking…one for bicycles…skates…ect. but no where on there is our beloved unicycle…so I have taken it on myself to get the city to add unicycles to all the signs…even if I am the only one I have ever seen on the trails. any suggestions except paint it on there myself would be helpful…I will post my progress from time to time…
A noble quest, to be sure. But have you seen that guy with the motorized roller skates? I guess he would deserve an icon also. And that guy with the kick bike? And those two guys with the springy stilts. They’ve got you outnumbered two to one.
In other words, perhaps the first weapon in your arsenal should be other unicyclists riding on the trail. Invite riders from your region for a big group ride, and take a picture on the trail. Bingo!
My local bike trail doesn’t have any icons. Maybe one for rowing…
they probably would deserve icons for each of those modes of transportation thats why I’ve got to beat the recumbent bicycle guy to it. there’s only so much space left on that sign…
but sadly, I have not seen any other unicycles on the trail…they see there is no
unicycle icon on the sign and go someplace else…
John. You’ve got to spearhead a group to ban these rowers from using your cycle trails. One can only imagine the damage that they must be inflicting to the ground surfaces in that area.
Hey I live in OKC. Have I met you or know you?
KH.
I don’t think so I would have remembered another unicyclist…I haven’t seen another on the trails…and most people that use the trails look at me like they haven’t either… but good to know you’re out there someplace…
The ground is fine, but they’re taking out all the trees and bushes within 10’ of the trail on each side! Somehow, though, the poison oak keeps growing back…
My favorite local road ride is a loop of the American River Bike Trail, that goes around Lake Natoma in Folsom. The lake includes the Aquatic Center, and the bike path passes through the land part of that facility. If we ever get the Olympics in San Francisco, the rowing competitions will be right there, along this excellent trail.
the photos at your web site are amazing…I’d love to carry my muni around some of those trails…
