IB Extended Essay

Hey, I am reading The Count of Monte Cristo for my IB EE. Whether or not you know what that stands for doesn’t matter. Can anyone help me think of a good “scholarly” novel that deals with similar themes? Because TCOMC is translated to English, I have to find a book originally in English to compare it too. My first thought was “The Cask of Amontillado”(sp?) by Poe, but apparently IBO doesn’t like the mixing of genre (a novel with a short story). ANy help is greatly appreciated.

I really don’t want this thread to die unless there really is no one who can help me.

well, it really shouldn’t be that hard to find novels that deal with the topic of revenge…

You’d think that huh? Well, I have seriously been searching for a few hours, I can’t find any good canidates that are written in English (not translated to English).

how about Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte?

Read Moby Dick by Herman Melville, that’s a revenge story. As a prelude or a chaser read any of the acounts of the sinking of the whale ship Essex such as “In the Heart of the Sea” byNathaniel Philbrick, a recent rendition based on the account of a cabin boy Thomas Nickerson who was one of the survivors of the ordeal. If you need an early account of the tradgedy the account of Owen Chase who was the mate on the Essex is again in print and dates to about 1820.
It’s worth mentioning that Chase’s account of the ordeal was the inspiration for Melville’s “Moby Dick”.
Another book with a twist on vengance is Ann Rice’s historical novle “Cry to Heven”.
Ok I’ll shut up now.

Thank you for the Ideas, I’ll run them by my mentor. I personally just thought of (go figure as to why it took so long) Julius Caesar by Shakespeare.
