I broke my sesamoid bone (small bone under the big toe, the ball of the foot) around 4 months ago. I had only found out it was broken 3 weeks ago. I did get pain when direct pressure was applied to the foot when unicycling (like backrolls because the ball of the foot starts at the end of the crank) but I did not know it was broken. Sometimes when doing crankflips or other tricks I smacked it really hard and I would lay rolling on the ground in pain for about 3-5 minutes. This is why I went to see the pediatrist.
According to the pediatrist, the bone should be healed in 6 weeks (3 weeks from now), I just have to stay off the unicycle, stop running and jumping, but walking is fine. But one thing that scares me is that I have been reading online about other people and their broken sesamoid experiences. One of them said they had been dealing with a broken sesamoid for 4 YEARS! Now I could be wrong but it may be dealing with the bone being taken out. For others it has been 4 months. So I’m not sure how long I will be off the unicycle/ (And UNICON XV IS COMING UP )
Anyway to the “NEED YOUR OPINION” part. Before I went to the pediatrist, I was full on unicycling, doing street just like…Everything I was unicycling like mad…with a broken sesamoid!
So do you think after 3 more weeks or maybe 4-5 weeks, even if the bone isn’t healed, I should go back to unicycling again?
Because before I was unicycling like mad. I would just ride like I normally would apart from backrolls and when direct pressure is applied to the bone when landing a crankflip wrong etc… How long is it worth waiting? I could wait like 3 months and there may be no improvement and that could of been 3 months of pure unicycling.
I am just in a bit of a rush because UNICON XV is coming up. But who knows maybe the bone will heal in 3 more weeks. I am planning too go strait to the doctors in 3 weeks time to have another X-Ray to see if it is healed or improved.
But yeah the key question is and I hope you can give your opinion:
So do you think after 3 more weeks or maybe 4-5 weeks, even if the bone isn’t healed, I should go back to unicycling again?
IMPORTANT: If after 3 weeks or 4-5 weeks the bone is showing signs of improvement, I would not go back to unicycling and therefore I would not be asking for your opinion, this is if there has been no improvement at all. (maybe I’m worrying to much?)
Patience and Perseverance have their rewards my friend. Just let the pain disappear and the healing doing its job and you’ll be back on a unicycle in no time.
Also if you are injured and don’t give yourself a break/chillout time now, IT will get much worse. Believe me on that.
Ask your doctor, not us. He is actually in possession of the facts (X-rays, access to your actual foot, etc.) while we have nothing. Unicon is still over 4 months away. There will be another Unicon after that. You only have two feet, and you need both of them to do what you’re doing on your unicycle. Think about it.
Just take a month of or so and then go back to your specialist and get their advice on how well it’s healed up. We don’t know any better than you on how bad you’ve hurt yourself and how long it’s going to take to heal. Just be patient and see what the doc says.
You’ve reminded me. I forgot to tell everyone. Originally in Janruary I strained a ligament in my foot and I had an X-rayn to find out wether i strained a ligament or cracked a bone. The doctor or the X-rayer (?) examined it and came to a conclusion that my the X-ray showed good results. But he did not even notice the sesamoid bone was in 2 bits! (but the pediatrist did). Even though the X-ray was to see if I had a cracked bone, he/she should of noticed the bone in two pieces.
I forgot to discuss the foot at the ball of the foot, I guess It wasn’t really on my mind, except when I hit it really hard as I was saying in the first post. So I could go strait to the doctors this week or just wait another 3 weeks.
Maybe all this typing is pointless. I’m sure there is someone out their with a broken sesamoid that is just resting it and not pointlesly typing this like I am.
with all these injuries you should be asking yourself what you think you are doing. you sound like a bit of a try-hard looking to impress people and in the process you just come-off seeming shallow and injuring yourself to boot.
am i wrong?
you should invest some time discovering how to chillax!
A. unisykolist, you post way too much content, half of that is irrelevant.
B. Stay off it for a while. I’d say probably about a month or more, bones in the feet are very soft and prone to injury, the longer your off it, the less prone to breaking it is.
