So Im having this problem with my CD drive, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. The problem is the CD drive wont open. I push the button and it makes a sound like its going to open, and then doesnt. Someone suggested the emergency eject pin hole in the front, and I tried it, and it lit up like it was going to open and then didnt. Ive tried smacking the computer… Anyone have any other suggestions?
The cd drive comes out? Do you know how Id do this. I guess I could google. Ok, whos going to tell me I could have easily googled this and its a wast of a post?
Yes, you could of googled this whole topic, and you have wasted all of our lives.
Actually, taking the cd drive out is very simple. on my tower, I just pop off the front, and can work from there, or slide of the sides if I need to. Your may have screws on the back that you will have to unscrew, then take the cover off.
I would make sure the comp is turned off and unplugged before doing anything to the insides of one.
Then, taking the power supply out of the drive, take out the slave\master cable from the drive, and the cord running from the drive to the sound card out. Then either unscrew the drive and slide it out, or just pop it out, depends on make and model of you comp and drive.
After that, taking the drive cover off is simple, just unscrew and pop it off, and youll see the insides and see the gears that open and close the drive, and you can go from there.
If it is just a CD-ROM drive, you could get a replacement for about $5.
You could try sticking a needle into that pinhole that you said you tried before but weren’t successful with. It will open if you do this. You can even do this with the power off as the eject-pinhole opens the drive mechanically (without using the motor).
I doubt that the motor is blown since you said that you can hear it making the sounds as though it wants to open. I think something is probably stuck in the way as Jerrick suggested.
I’m assuming you used a paperclip in the eject pin hole? How hard did you push? You have to push pretty hard to get the tray to come out… ignore the lights and whatnot… you’re not pushing a button inside the hole, you’re pushing on a mechanical lever that forces the tray to come out. Just make sure you push straight in and not at an angle.
The paper clip into the hole always works. The slightly bigger than normal paper clips are better, and you sometimes have to push quite hard. It helps to straighten out the clip It will not break the drive. I have done it at least a couple of dozen times for people who were worried that they might lose their Madonna CD when a broken CD drive is swapped out.
sometimes the eject belt goes bad, either breaks or just gets too worn out to work. that’s probably what’s happened. Time for a new drive…you wanted to upgrade to DVD-R drive anyways, didn’t you?
I was using a push pin, and I thought I was pushing hard enough. I really applied force tho this time, and thought for sure I had pushed the button right in, and broke it, but alass it opened about half a cm. So, I pryed it from there, and now it works again.
