… I had absolutely no idea they were that colour!
I can’t quite decide whether I should be amazed at how clean they are now, or horrified at the utterly manky state they were in earlier…

Re: I just washed the inserts in my helmet
Now that’s quotable.
I think it’s next to Mississippi.
I soak my helmet in soapy water every couple of months. The pads and straps get covered in salt from sweat. When the straps get smelly it is past time for a wash.
Damn you Phil for making me feel manky, I’ll not be able to wear mine now until I’ve washed it (ahem - for the first time)
You mean those things come OUT?
The most helmet maintenance I’ve ever done is to throw it back into the “boot” of my car after a ride (so it can dry out in time for the next ride).
the closest to washing my helmet I ever come is using a water fountain to soak all the inside part with water, then putting it back on. feels soo good… also makes it look like I have a perspiration problem.
I just stick the entire helmet in the sink. I don’t bother to take the pads out. Taking the pads out would mean I’d have to readjust the fit of the helmet again because of the way my helmet is. Dunking the whole helmet in the sink is also the only way to really clean the straps.
Well, they are forecasting a lot of weather in my area and I plan to do lots of riding anyway. What a great helmet-washing time-saver!
Edit: ok, I’m an idiot and I meant to say they are forecasting a lot of rain in my area. Proof-reading is not just for spelling!
Am I just that dirty? I have never cleaned my helmet, and I dont really see much reason to start now. Both my helmets have been used quite a bit and yea they get a bit of salt ring from sweat on em from time to time but no real funk smell in 4 years of sweat so I figure something must be going right. Just air dry after use, there is nothing worse than putting on a helmet that is still soaked in sweat from yesterdays ride.
i resently put my Roach armour in the Washing Machine, you sould have seen the black ooze that came out the drain hose.
I guess the plumbing in your neck of the woods is pretty medieval, 'cause I can’t see what goes through my drain hoses
I didn’t bother washing my helmet, I just ripped the manky old foam pieces out and double-sticky-taped some new pieces of thick felt cloth in their place… works great!
That’s the thing, they didn’t! Putting on a sweaty helmet half way round a ride is one thing, but doing so when you haven’t started yet and are still fresh and fragrant is just rather horrible.
They’re manky again tonight, fear ye not…

mid evil, I think not. We have an outside drain sorta in the woods next to my parents house which the water from the washer exits to the great outdoors. Where else does the water go? Its like a little stream after a wash is done. I remember playing in the bubbles when I was a kid that would float down the hose’s exit stream. It was great. I’m sure environmentally unfriendly… cause the soap bubbles come out too…but… meh.
I think its jsut different in cities. with underground “streams” I feel like a moron cause I dont know what those man hole streams are callled. Man… idiot I am! heheh
When I was going to college the washing machines drained into the large utility sink. The hoses went right to the sink and you could see all the dirty water as it swirled around the drain in the sink. Not medieval.
Ive never washed my helmet, but ive onyl used it 3-4 times But when i do clean my helmets i take the pads out. But my shin gaurds ::shudders::
I wash my helmet every day, smells of cheese otherwise.
Your profile says you’re from the UK, but I thought cheese-heads came from Green Bay, Wisconsin?!
