The first time we had a long jump competition (1999), I believe there was a
requirement of forward motion. I got around this by combining riding forward
with a jump at kind of a 45 degree angle, which worked for me at the time.
But other riders have done better with forward hops, and this seems it will
be the method for the longest jumps in the years to come, as this event is
still in its infancy.
However, we’re not going to tell you how to jump, just where. There will be
two objects on the ground, such as pieces of wooden dowel. You have to clear
both of them for your jump to be counted. If you touch one of the pieces of
wood the jump doesn’t count. You can keep trying longer and longer distances
until you fail twice at the same distance. If you fail once you get to try
again. On landing, you must be able to ride (or hop) away. This means either
three revolutions of the wheel after landing, or a minimum of 3 seconds of
hopping or otherwise staying on the unicycle after landing.

Yes, you can jump any way you want. You can also spell any whay you want,
which is not counted in the competition.

Yes, it’s an optional event and there was no proposal for adding it in our
last round of changes. Perhaps that and the high jump will be added after
UNICON 11 so the rules will be consistent.
