Don’t just shoot “somebody”. Shoot a country singer and write a song about it.
There are genres of country music that do have actual talent. Bluegrass has some talented musicians and isn’t necessarily cheesy like the popular country music on the radio.
I love country music but not the shit you hear on the radio (example, “she think my tractor’s sexy”). I hear that all the time in my friend’s houses and cars and I think I’ll die if I hear it anymore.
But if you listen to Johnny Cash, Utah Phillips or Townes Van Zandt, you’ll be like “ooooo… ear sex!”
Or at least I am.
I don’t mind that it’s predictable as long as the lyrics are good.
So very true, I am actually a big fan of good, non comercialized, non twangified bluegrass.
I should have elaborated, any country that you’ll see on GAC or CMT or even VH1 or MTV and/or hear it on the radio. THAT is the country that grates at my soul.
I like chilled out country. I hate all the mandolins and fiddlers playing as fast as they possibly can. To me, it’s talent and the result of years of pactice… but it sounds really cheesey. Like Alvin and the Chipmunks playing the Dixie Chicks.
Is noting a country’s shortcomings bad? I think it’s quite patriotic because then you can help save your country from being a shit-hole nation. I certainly hate a whole lot about America but I don’t think the nation’s doomed… it just kinda sucks right now…
Not bad at all, and I agree people need to speak up in a civil debate. But I love my country in the grand scheme of things. No Country is perfect. But the Citizens of America for the most part (like you ) are good, giving and hard working. There will always be dissent and protest, regardless of who’s in the white house. But there are many ominous signs that make me very worried about the future.
So bad - a matter of personal opinion
So contrived - there is countless “contrived” music in every genre
So fake - ditto
So talentless - why does talent necessarily dictate great music?
So predictable - isn’t almost all music? I IV V I.
SOOOOOOOOO cheesy - is it only cheesy because you can’t really relate, except through idealized notions about the lives of “country” people?
I’ve heard the exact same argument about almost any genre of music. The fact is, there is crappy music in every genre, especially the stuff on TV. Get over it. Get your ass to a folk/country festival and hear some REAL country music.
That being said, I’m not a huge country fan, but I love going to folk music festivals and such. The music there just depicts a different view on life.
It’s interesting how someone goes from “I don’t like country” to “country sucks.”
Well, no, it doesn’t “suck,” and in fact it’s a legitimate musical genre that some people love - but you happen to strongly dislike it. I believe that musical genres should be respected even if you don’t like them. What’s wrong with saying “I don’t like country/rap/metal/pop but I respect it, and understand that it really appeals to some other people.”
I feel I should be saying this in a whisper for fear of Harper coming in here and writing a 10 page paper on why rap is the worst thing since moldy bread.
Officially in the running for my “Post of the year” nomination.
Beyond his own recordings, there have been so many amazing interpretations of his work. I think my favorite is this album by Lyle Lovett, which has several Townes tunes with amazing arrangements. Highway Kind is stunning, with sublime Jerry Douglas.
Lucinda Williams leads the next tier. Try this and this. Hell, try everything she’s ever recorded.
The of course there’s this. Music that helps keep the earth spinning…
But I don’t need to tell goats that. The message is to Unitik908: Sure there’s a lot of crap country. There’s also a lot of crap rock. And soul. And classical. And especially jazz. Find the things that are transcendant, and spend your time there. When in doubt, ask.
