I feel like puting on my boots and braces and stomping some Jews

So the other day, My friend was over at my house, anyways, i put on some Skrewdriver as a joke, I laughed along about how rediculus white power music is, but he did’t think it was funny at all. And hes not the type to be super serious and PC. He said something along the lines of, “I dont care if you think its funny because its so racist, turn it off.”

they song goes like

I stand watch my country, going down the drain
We are all at fault, we are all to blame
We’re letting them takeover, we just let 'em come
Once we had an Empire, and now we’ve got a slum

(chorus)
White Power! For England!
White Power! Today
White Power! For Britain
Before it gets too late

Well we’ve seen a lot of riots, we just sit and scoff
We’ve seen a lot of muggings, and the judges let 'em off

(chorus)

Well we’ve gotta do something, to try and stop the rot
And the traitors that have used us, they should all be shot

(chorus)

middle eight:
Are we gonna sit and let them come?
Have they got the White man on the run?
Multi-racial society is a mess
We ain’t gonna take much more of this
What do we need?

(chorus)

Well if we don’t win our battle, and all does not go well
It’s apocalypse for Britain, and we’ll see you all in hell

(chorus) x2

Am I just a sick schmuck?
I get that feeling a lot.
For examples, search for chikin as a thread title.

My sarcasm is screwing up my relationships too

DK, exactly what kind of response were you hoping to elicit with this post?

How, for example, do you happen to come to own white supremacist music? Was it part of a research project? Do like the musicianship even though you don’t like the lyrics? Were you at one time in agreement with the sentiments expressed in the lyrics, but no longer are? Did you get it because you thought it had comedy value?

As a Jew I couldn’t help but become somewhat alarmed when I saw the title of your thread. I assumed it was spam until I saw that you, a regular here, were the author. Then I really didn’t know what to expect and regardless I am as I write this still quite discomfitted.

I just posted it for a getting it off my back feeling.
I have ruined alot of my relationships with people, or made people think i’m an ass because I am way to sarcastic or laugh at the wrong moments.

As for where i got the music, Skrewdriver is a well know Oi band that after a few (quite good)albums, became crazy nazis, so when you type a band in on a p2p program , you get a bunch of stuff, and I just click away, thus getting a bunch of stuff of different albums.

I thinks its funny how ignorant people can be.

I am not racist, facist, nazi, sexist, homophobic, etc. etc.

My dad is jewish. My dad’s girlfriend is jewish.

I dont know… I tried to go back and delete it, but my time had run out.

Maybe Gilbster can delete it

Good, because those would be serious matters. That you are lacking in judgement and taste, we can overlook.

By the way, my dad was Jewish, too (as you might have guessed) but his girlfriends weren’t always.

Your friend is right. You shouldn’t be playing that kind of music as a joke. It’s not funny and is very distasteful.

There is a big difference between listening to the Dead Kennedys sing about killing the poor and listening to white power Nazi bands sing about the crap they sing about. The difference is that the Dead Kennedys aren’t serious about killing the poor. The white power bands are serious about promoting what they sing about.

Play something by the Mentors if you want to make a joke about stupid lyrics. Don’t play anything by a white power band. In fact, delete that crap from your computer.

Agreed, a friend told me about Skrewdriver a few years ago and I checked it out, but as soon as I saw that a majority of theirmusic was white power bullshit I deleted it.

I’ll kill a nazi, just for fun. I ain’t jokin’.

Whit power is for weak sons of bitches that have nothing else to pride in.

Then it should be apparent to you that your post lacked tact and good taste. It’s going to illicite a negative and possibly hurtful response despite your intentions. You need to put yourself in their shoes, because they’re reaction is going to be the same reguardless of your personal feeling and beliefs. Many of these feeling they illicite may not be based on logic but more on past things that have happened to them and their family - thus wether or not you think that, logically, they should be offended or not is irrelevant. What’s relevant is that they are offended or hurt and are going to be offended or hurt no matter what when you say things like that. It’s not ignorant of them, it’s ignorant of you to think otherwise.

If the rule is that X leads to Y it doesn’t matter why someone did X. Don’t get upset when Y happens when you do X because you should know that will be the outcome no matter what. The motivations for you doing X are irrelevant.

your friends shouldn’t take these things seriously unless you listen to a lot of white supremacist music. i say some pretty racist things all the time and i’m only half joking, but most ppl don’t mind because i appear to hate everyone equally.

Well, admitting there’s a cause and effect relationship here is hopefully the first step to addressing the problem, assuming you also admit that ruining a lot of your relationships with people IS a problem.

There’s a whole field of study around the concepts of “social intelligence” and “emotional intelligence”, terms which, loosely translated, mean “not ruining relationships by being way too sarcastic or laughing at the wrong moments”. Run an internet search on either term to learn more…there’s a lot of content, and the field is so big now it even supports dedicated helpers like this guy.

That’s probably the best way to show them the error of their ways.

Interesting mix of emotions.

I read the thread title and was alarmed. Very.

Then I guessed it was ironic, and I think I was right.

Then i thought about an artist in my CD collection. He performs as “Selfish Cu**”. I saw the CD, and for entirely puerile reasons, decided I might want to buy it for the name alone.

Then I read the lyrics in the CD liner. Hmmm. Lots of Nazi stuff - and I’m strongly anti-Nazi (having an actively Nazi brother).

Then I re-read, and decided perhaps the words were ironic. No one could really believe that nonsense, could they, so perhaps it is a parody, exaggerated to mock the Nazi mentality?

But then, I know the nonsense my brother really does believe. I’ve argued with him about it.

So I made inquiries, and friends suggested they’d heard of Selfish **nt and they were sure it was ironic.

And I went back to the store and re-read the lyrics.

In the end, I bought the CD. It’s wierd stuff - but fun, now and again.

I love post-modern irony. Post modern irony is waht I would define as laughing in a knowing way at something that isn’t funny. You laugh at the fact that we used to think it was funny. We laugh at the fact that it shocks. There is no malice involved.

It is a high risk form of humour. You need to know the person you are speaking too very well indeed. I have a gay friend I can call a “shirt lifter” without causing offence. I have a black friend I can joke with about “Where you came from” and she laughs back and joins the fun. My dad once ended up in front of a tribunal for misjudging this sort of humour.

I would be very very wary of putting that sort of humour in a public forum like this. Too much to go wrong. Who might find and invade this forum by putting those words into Google?

DK, I’m sure, is no racist, and intended no harm. Nevertheless, it was a misjudgement to use that thread title. On the other hand, it has opened an important subject for debate.

I have gotten this impression from many of your past posts. It seems you like to offend, or illicit quick and angry responses. If you are not trying to offend, you should go back and read some of your posts in various other threads and question your motives.

Sarcasm is a humor technique that is very easy to get wrong. If not delivered with the right balance, it will either offend or just not be funny. And this balance cannot be acheived without knowing your audience. For example if you post something here, you are basically guaranteed to offend some, bore others, and possibly make some laugh. With people you are face-to-face with, if you don’t know their tastes, you always take a risk when using sarcasm.

I don’t mean to sound precious (although I do live in Boulder, Colorado) but we need to be as careful with what we put in our minds as we are with what we put in our bodies. On a certain level, it doesn’t matter if you think it ironic or facinating, it’s in your mind and you have accepted it.

You are SO precious, Jim.

I know the feeling that you can’t help but laugh at things like that. It’s just so extreme that it becomes absolutely hillarious that anyone can seriously believe something like that.
A less controversial example could be the time I posted about the Danish-Canadian dispute over Hans’ Island.
I know it’s about principles and arctic resources and all that, but when I browsed to my regular newssite expecting the usual budgets and boring personal attacks etc. I, completely unexpectedly, get hit with a headline saying that we’ve invaded Canada. The idea just seemed too surreal.

I know it is easy for me not to take nazis seriously, since I’m not threadened by them. Once you realise how many people actually more or less agree with the white power crap, it not so funny anymore.
DK’s post was sarcastic (thanks for clearing that up), so I hope Gilby leaves it in place. Nothing wrong with ridiculing nazis.

Interesting. Not sure I agree, but interesting.

Ideas and phrases soak into the mind. The mind learns patterns and sequences of thought, just as the body learns patterns and sequences of movement.

I have twice seen trained fighters release potentially lethal knee-fist-elbow combinations with little provocation. The wrong moment, the trigger, the learned response. Frightening to see.

The mind can behave in a similar way. Indeed, I’m sure it often does. We seldom stop and think before acting. Life would be slow and tedious if we did.

Maybe with the right (or wrong) trigger we can forget the irony and act or speak as if we believe the Nazi ideas. (Or racist, sexist, homophobic, etc.)

Food for thought.

Sarcasm and internet forums do NOT go well together.

Thank you Greg.

Actually I maintain that your degree of preciousness is proportional to the length of your coffee order. I order a large (I refuse to say Venti).

Hmmm…
I think I’ll go listen to “The Brews” by NOFX…

Ourselves as other see us:

I came to the forum today, and I saw this thread title, and the last person to post was called “Evil Nick”.

Not a public relations coup.
