I guess all my unicycling in the past year and a half has ruined my ability to steer with my hands on a bike.
A few days ago, I was riding a friend’s fixed gear bike to practice while I build my own. I reached over to fix my messenger bag, which was leaning to the side; and before I know it, I’ve steered the front wheel into a parking block. This sent me tumbling over the handlebars, and the first thing to hit the ground was my chin.
I now have nine stitches in my chin and a hairline fracture in my jaw. On top of that, the permanent wire retainer I wore on my bottom row of teeth was completely destroyed, but it managed to save me from losing 3 or 4 teeth. But the very worst part of this injury is that I bruised a bone in my left thumb, so I can’t even go out to practice unispins until that heals too.
About all I can do is look for new unicycling videos to watch. So get posting!
Not that your injury is funny, but what a hilarious story! Imagine, the audacity of just thinking you can turn your body any which way with no consequence like you were on a unicycle!
It reminds me of when I had a 1981 Jetta where there seatbelts were attached to the door…you were wearing a seatbelt, you opened the door, you got out. you opened the door, you got in, and your seatbelt was already on. There were countless times I would try to get out of my friends’ cars without taking the seatbelt off, and they always caught me doing it
That’s how I am man.
When i was younger, pre-uni days, i could ride no handed for ever, i got almost 4 miles once without touching my handle bars.
Now when i try, i can’t seem to get more that 15 feet.
I always thought that was weird…
Unlucky man,a few years ago i went over my handlebars and broke my four front teeth,my nose and chipped the bone in my chin, and i was holding on at the time.
Sorry to hear it. I had a similar (but not nearly as bad) experience. I went to cycle an old bike up the garden were I was going to cut it up and make it into a unicycle. I hoped on and jerkily pedaled it, I only managed a few meters before I began tp drift towards a bush, I struggled to controll it somehow not being able to steer the handlebars??? but before I could seem to do anthing I had crashed into and fallen into the bush. Fortionatly it was at a low speen and the bush was relativly soft but it was so weird, I couldnt believe that I had forgotten how to ride a bike. Next time I tried to ride a bike was on the road and I managed to work it, it felt so weird to be able to free wheel. I havnt realy tried riding much but one thing I found is that I cant ride no-handed anymore. I thought it would be easier after riding a uni. Before I could ride all round my village no-handed but I couldnt ride more than a few meters when I tried.

Weird you guys have had the same experience trying to ride a bike no handed. I think it can only be because when riding a uni, not holding onto anything you have full controll wereas on the bike you dont so it feels uncompftable, the compftable thing being to hold the handlebars so you revert back to it without thinking. I dont think I have exsplained that proparly, hopfuly you get the jist.
Yeah, but not for too long, and only in a straight line. I think unicycling taught me how to handle bumps and dips in the road, and how to ease into and out of turns.
That’s just like student drivers stearing the car to the right when they look over their right shoulder. It takes some practice before they can turn their head and keep the car going straight. Same thing on a bike.
My fixie is very twitchy. The geometry is a cross between a racing bike and a track bike. If you even think of looking to the left or right the bike wants to go that way. That makes it fun to ride (like a sports car) but you have to always be aware.
