I broke my first Uni part tonight

So I was riding feeling great landing a bunch of stuff I dont normally get, like a good 1.5+ wall, jumped clear on it, ohh yeah. So I figured I would go for this 4 foot drop from a flower bed onto the sidewalk. First try goes, I wasnt to confident on the take off, so I bailed. Attempt 2 I thought I stuck it and as I was thinking Time to ride away POP! and parts of my left crank arm go flying. I have 140 Lasco cranks, or well had them. It just so happend to shatter into 3 parts (Broken arroudn the where they bolt on to the hub)
I’ll try to get pix of it soon. I was kinda proud to Join the club of hardcore Trials riders with broken gear. But then I was bummed I couldnt ride anymore.
Any sugestions on replacement parts? I want something near the 140’s I had in size, also I’m not looking to spend much more than $50 MAYBE $75 for new cranks I was thinking about the BE’s

sounds to me like, if your doing 4 ft drops, your going to be doing more of them, and bigger ones, and if you mange to find cranks that hold up, your hub wont…at least thats my expierience. profiles???

Ok so how good are the Monty Trials Cranks? I’m starting to seriouly concider them…

I know Monty Trials BIKE cranks are good. They are strong, durable, and last awhile. They prolly have the same quality for Unis… I agree with him, the hubs will go next from my experience with bikes. But those can be fixed cuz the problem usually lies in the bearings. Good Luck.

P.S. Pics would be good. Can’t wait.

There’s a company called Profile that makes good stuff… not sure how much they cost though
Congratulations on joining the club though.

i think there have been posts from some people just in the last week about Monty cranks bending.i think they will be stonger but in the end failure will occur.

sell that Audi or trade it for Profiles.

NEVER sell or trade an audi (unless its to me)

I dont plan on selling my audi anytime soon either. Sorry trev.

But its really not anything great. Yeah its a German car but its also an 88, with 133K miles on it. I got a decent deal on the thing >3000 for it or arround 2.6 KH Uni’s. The big thing I need my car is to go home. Riding a 20" just isnt practical going back to MD. By the time I would get there my winter break would be over. Then when are you spose to go snowboarding?

Jag get over my Car your not gettin it Muah HAHAHA…

some people have had success with kooka cranks too.
however as far as i can tell, monty and kooka cranks are only available in sizes over 160mm, getting high quality 140 mm cotterless cranks might be a problem.
in general if you start breaking stuff you realy need to get splined cranks
onza hubs should be available soon which are cheaper than profiles and nearly as good.

i lied, you CAN get 140mm monty cranks.

but i’d consider saving for a splined hub/cranks because the less your cranks bend the more stress is put on the axle. which is more expensive to replace,

start saving for a profile hub and make do with BE cranks untill you can afford it. you’ll go through a few sets of cranks but your hub will survive a bit longer,
(as long asyou makesure that you cranks are put on realy tight)

lasco cranks are the worst possible cranks to use for trials,
( i don’t know why unicycle.com put lasco cranks on thier trials unis, its a silly idea)
Bicycle Euro are much better, but at the end of the day cotterless cranks/hubs are unsuited to trials.
i have no experience of monty cranks, but they do look better than BE cranks.

bear in mind that if your cranks don’t bend then you axle will snap.

Thanks guys
I think tomorrow morning before I go to class I’m gonna order some BE’s from Unicycle.com

And the next upgrade for my Uni is gonna be the Hub hopefully by the time I bend the BE’s I’ll get a KH or Onza Splined Hub

Or perhaps I will have started up my EShop enough to have a cheap $215 Profile

I’m interested to get my freestyle uni together and see how I like the BE. It will be nice having cranks that don’t gouge into my ankles.

I finally got together some pix of my broken crank
Take a look if you fancy

Well done, you tore the hell out of that crank!

Re: I broke my first Uni part tonight

Nice job! I’ve never seen one in more than two pieces. I hope you now see
the light: Just say NO to Lasco cranks.

I’m impressed! Nice break!

I used to be more into mountain biking, and when I broke something, I would hang it up from my ceiling. I had a handful of broken chain links, a few broken derailleurs, etc.

Well if it’s any help to you I use an old cottered hub on my trials uni with steel cranks.
The steel cranks are heavy but totally bomb-proof, the axle is nearly half again at least as thick as a square taper hub and the cotter pins are of a sufficiently poor grade steel that they will deform before the hub does.
I have done some big drops on this set-up onto flat tarmac with no adverse happenings other than 3 dead cotter pins.

All this and for the price of a standard hub

well that’s my theory
