Yesterday, I took the KH24 up into Derbyshire with a vague plan to ride on one of the gritstone edges.
Within half a mile, I knew I wasn’t good enough to ride up the path, so I carried the uni to the top with a very vague plan to ride down.
Within a few metres, I knew I wasn’t good enough for that, either! Pedal strikes and UPDs, sideslips on the mud, and too much imagination to go over the drops. (I’m 44, and I have a scar on my chin from 7 stitches induced by going over a rocky step about 4 years ago.)
Humiliation when a teenage girl who clearly thought herself very sophisticated said loudly, “Oh, a unicycle, how embarrassing!”
Today, my new broadband modem arrived, and I now have access to Youtube.
Of course, I immediately searched for “unicycling” and “muni” as well as the obvious ones like Morris dancing and naked nuns.
I have never really had the chance to see “proper” Muni (or, for that matter, naked nuns), and I am now humbled. The stuff that was unimaginably beyond my capability yesterday was nothing compared to what some of the teenagers are doing - sometimes without any protection at all. Have they no imagination?
Back to the river bank, and the herons.:o
No, they haven’t any fear. For guys our age, that translates as having no common sense. They’ll learn. We’ll see if they’re still doing the same stuff when they’re in their mid-40s.
None of the above represents me saying I wouldn’t love to be able to do what some of my fellow riders do, even on the rides I go on!
Welcome to the 21st century and broadband, Mikefule. Guard your time carefully!
Terry is due in here any minute now…
What‽ Did he just recently get broadband too?
That explains why he’s always surfing YouTube.
Actually if you search “unicycling muni” on youtube most of the “real” muni videos are of Terry…

For me it’s the opposite; I look at my old vid from 1966 and realize that the uni technology necessary to do the extreme stuff I do today just didn’t exist then! I guess at nearly 52, it’s better late than never…It’s a feeling that I have so much catching up to do, but also realize that I’ll never reach all my uni-goals at my agebecause of my advanced age, but it’s fun trying anyway…while I still can! And no, I’ll never learn haha!
