Humbled

‘In training’ (ahem) I was pleased to do 10.4 miles in a timed hour, and even more pleased a few days later when I managed 11.1 miles in a timed hour - all this on the Coker with 150s.

Paula Radcliffe did the first 11 miles of the London Marathon in approx. 57 minutes and went on to average 11.5 mph (approx.) for the whole distance. Goodness knows how fast she’d be on a Coker!

I felt humbled.

Ah, but you’re still faster than the sorority girls out for a run and that’s all that really matters. I didn’t have a Coker when I was at university so it was more difficult for me to keep the cute girls in view if they happened to be a good runner.

Re: Humbled

And you’re in the “slow” team at the Red Bull right?

I hate to think how fast the fast team will be. Sounds like there’ll be some competition between unicycle teams this year.

Re: Re: Humbled

I think I’m in the B team, which I think (if I’ve understood correctly) is the reasonably fast but not busting a gut team.

My quoted distances in an hour (10.4 and 11.1 miles) were on flattish levelish terrain. On a timed hour of mixed terrain/cross country, I was down to about 8 miles - and that wasn’t hilly, just rough and varied.

Worst of all, I did 2 miles in half an hour the other day, but that was mainly on soft sand and gravel, with a substantial element of inadvertant autopronation. :astonished:

The trick is to be able to ride comfortably at the same speed. After
all, it’s psychologically very difficult to ride past them

Of course, the looks that a unicycle draws can be a problem. While out
on the Muni last week I passed a couple of young ladies, one of whom
looked over her shoulder at me just in time to catch me looking over my
own shoulder to look at her arse. Who knows, I might have been able
to pull, but then the wife would have killed me!

This year we have 3 teams in “Redbull”. One fast team (we’re expecting
them to beat bikes) and 2 (hopefully) evenly matched teams who’ll be
trying to beat each other - but we won’t be upset if we beat bikes too.

BTW, when Joe rode in a Redbull team, he was in the “slow” team. Look
where that got him. Eeek.

Mark.
