I’m glad you asked.
I don’t own a car, and I ride my bicycle and walk everywhere I need to be. (yes, I am a college student, and I understand this is not an option for everyone…) I keep all my showers under 5 minutes. I use compact flourescent lightbulbs, and try to keep lights off as much as possible. I turn off my computer every night. I keep the temperature in my room below 18 degrees celsius. I try to buy organic and local products as much as possible and compost and recycle. I am active in my school’s environmental society. Basically, I try to reduce my use of water and electricity as much as I can.
Check out http://www.myfootprint.org to see what your impact is. Mine is close to 3 earths, I think, but a big part of that is due to how much time I spend flying each year.
OK, thanks. My response: I think that Pelosi’s request is way uncool. I’m frankly surprised that she would be such a d!ck about something like that. It just blantantly tarnishes her image with dems and repubs. This is something I’d expect from Cheney, but not from a left-of-center dem.
I appreciate your intellectual honesty! And I whole-heartedy agree! I don’t think much of either party right now. The democrat party or the republican party.
I don’t know if I lend much “scientific” credence to that little interesting quiz, but I scored a “footprint” of 16, or 3.6 planets. My “footprint”, according to the website, is at least far below the average of 24 for pp living in the US.
Although…I checked this story out further, and the reason she claimed to need such a large aircraft is that the House security wanted her to be able to fly without stops back to her home district, and the the previous speaker didn’t live as far away, and so didn’t need as large of an aircraft. She also said (on Fox News, noless) that she’d be glad to fly commercial, and the House security dept don’t want her to. The story was blown out of proportion a bit.
How you could you not be aware of it? As for degrees, I have several, just one in science. I am certainly smart enough to realize that not everything is as it seems. Everything the scientific community has thrown at us to scare the shit out of us gets reversed 50 times.
When climatoligists can’t tell me with some degree of certainty what the weather will be next week, how am I supposed to trust their predictions for next year, or over the next 100 years. There are so many variables that affect what the climate will be that for these ass hats to think for 1 minute that they know what the hell is going on is just funny. The fact that a bunch of lemmings are following them off a cliff is even funnier. One volcanic eruption could cause a lot more damage than 10 years of driving cars, The magnetic poles could switch polarity, the sun could change the amount of energy it is putting out. And you people think that if you drive a Prius, we will stop Global Warming? The same chicken little crying about Global Warming, were certain the world would come to an end if we used Nuclear Power. The realty is that is a great option. So is Solar and hopefully the research into nano technologies will actually create efficient solar energy. Wind farms another good option as long is it’s not in Robert or Ted Kennedy’s backyard. And of course we still need to address the Screecher of the House Polosi from creating an even larger impact on the environment for wanting a 757 for her trips home. GMAFB! Were are all the tree huggers and global warming fanatics? Why aren’t they marching on Washington right now. She is willing to burn more full in one trip than I will burn in my lifetime. Mindboggling. Were is the outrage?
Okay, here’s this human’s impact on the environment. I am tired of these curly-Q fluorescent light bulbs that are supposed to last 5 years and save all this energy. I only care about the saving energy part as far as it will save me money on my utility bill. So we’ve been trying them out thinking that we’ll save in the long run. Well, what happened to the longevity of these stinking things? I’ve yet to have one last for more than half a year.
The latest one I bought last November was a big one that was supposed to be the equivilent of 150 watts but only use 40 watts to use over my desk while studying. So, what, it’s been in use four months now? I just moved my lamp, the thing jiggled slightly, something inside came apart, and now it doesn’t work. I paid about $10.00 for this thing. What a sucker I am. In this case, Silvania really saw me coming!
I’m going back to the energy-guzzling incandescent bulbs that cost 68 cents a piece. At least they’re dependable.
Now I think I’ll go chop down all the trees in my yard…
Edit: I found my receipt. I bought it December 27, 2007. It’s going back to Menards for a refund!
I don’t know what kind of junk they’re overcharging you for. Even my cheap 7$ ones have lasted more than a year now, despite the lamp being knocked down from the wall at one time.
… so you’ll save on electricity with more free eco-friendly sunlight through your windows. Good thinking.
EDIT: 7$ may not sound cheap, but here, with sales tax and a weak dollar, it is.
