For a 4" wide tire?
How 'bout a tree trunk.
Re: Hub building
Are you planning to bolt your cast wheel to a flange on the axle … ?
… or is it designed to use spokes ?

Re: Hub building
Heh Hi all
Well, wow - didn’t expect that big a response! Well the problem is now solved I’m afraid - I took the afternoon off to play and sort it all out.
The problem was how to attach bearings to axle - axle to hub and crank to axle
This will now be solved by my making a new - extra wide hub
The spec then if you’re interested:
Hub: drop forged axle coupled with some handy steel
High spec roller bearings (coz I’ve got them lying around)
19inch Cast hub, 5 spokes and rim
One HUGE tyre - 4 inch wide - rounded square profile (onza style) - when built up it’s the same outside diameter as my 26inch
Frame - my own - nothing else will fit. Hunter/vortex hybrid style to allow me some leg clearance. there are plans however to construct a monoblade version next
Photos - coming soon
Theory behind project:
Basicly I figure that the relatively high rotational inertia (all the weight is in the wheel) coupled with big spongy tyre will give the uni an advantage off road. One of the cokers big advantages is it’s rotational inertia - you crank it up to speed and i
t just rolls on over anything - helped by all that stored energy.
The big tyre will allow me to float over stuff and actually get some grip over roots and things.
I’ll keep you all informed as to the progress - don’t hesitate to make suggestions though
sheesh, any wider and you’d have bowlegs like a cowboy!

The amount of advantage will probably be linked to the cycle’s weight. But
in any case, it should be fun to ride! Wide tires should be especially well
suited to sand or other loose surfaces.
Stay on top,

A little off topic
If you really want to go all out check out
www.firstprinciples.ca/
It’s a company that makes a hub adaptor for some regular bike hubs to accept disc brakes.
Maybe they can make one to fit whatever hub you’re using…
