how to build a shopping cart?

I decided to ask for ideas for this project here because I think there are a lot of creative unicyclists out there; let’s face it, just the fact that you ride a unicycle means you think outside of the box at least some of the time.

I have moved to a neighbourhood where, finally, I can walk to the grocery store, and lots of other shops for that matter. I am thrilled to no longer need to drive all over the place to get my weekly errands done.

Now I find that hauling a week’s worth of groceries home is a bit of a challenge. The goods are heavy and do not take favourably to be slung about in the process of transport.

So I am thinking of making a cart. And what I was hoping to use for the project was some extra skateboard trucks and wheels that I have kicking around.

The cart could be some sort of upright jobby, a frame type of unit onto which I could hang the giant nylon shoulder bag that I put all my groceries in to save on using plastic grocery bags. Or, I imagine it could be something that rolls along on four wheels kind of like a kid’s wagon.

I’m open to ideas in terms of how to build such an item. Construction techniques should be simple given I have few tools and no real workshop space to put this together. And it would be ideal if the shopping cart didn’t take up too much space as storage is an issue where I live.

Bring on your ideas!

And if you or someone you know have already come up with a homemade shopping cart, please do tell and post some pix.

Hmm skateboard wheels. Extreme shopping cart routines coming our way soon?

You could buy a wagon or something, or like a bike trailer and ride there…I wonder if one could attach a bike trailer to a unicycle…that would be interesting.
Or if feeling reckless you could steal one from the store.
As for building one yourself, I don’t build things, so I donno.
This post was probably unhelpful!

a uni with a bike trailer… i think thats a tricycle buddy :stuck_out_tongue:

This is a cheap chop but this would be nice

Ill choose this

Or go fishing in the local stream and your find 1:P

If you had something designed along two wheels like a hand truck, I’d imagine you could push it with a unicycle…

Sweet:p

How far do you live from the grocery store? We live a block away from two big grocery stores. We use them as pantries. Sometimes we’ll go there three times in a day. We just walk because we usually don’t carry that much and don’t need a cart. Maybe you live too far for that.

Maybe you should switch to a diet of ultra-lightweight food. Then it would be easy to carry home just walking.

im positive its possible to hook one of the baby carriages up to a unicycle, smcmorrow and I tried it earlier this year, and it rides pretty much the same, corners are just a little tricky

Harper, your idea of lightweight diet food is about the best one so far!

Tobogonist, I’m don’t quite get what you picture represents - not sure I really want to know though…

I didn’t either, so I looked it up.

Very helpful, thanks James.

It is generally accepted as scottish slang for poo.
sorry for not being a great help, i just saw the opurtunity and couldnt help myself.

Buy a shopping cart on Ebay and put 4 Gullwings on it. The Gullwings should be stolen from a poser’s S9, too.

uhh
how about you make a wooden rectangular box about 1 1/2 feet deep, 3 feet wide and 4-5 feet long

should require a skill saw(circular saw), jig saw, table saw, saw-zaw(cutoff saw), chainsaw(HAH), or scroll saw(if you are really ambitious and patient about this!
a drill
and screws
and glue

and bigger wheels… say training wheels for a bike, drill extra holes lower in them and magic … you have a shopping cart… then make a handle, but be careful to make that strong, and if you need a hinge(for the handle), use a door hinge, dont settle for anything less or you will regret it.

i was thinking the same thing

Could this be an inspiration?

It’s a bike trailer that doubles as a shopping cart (or vice versa).

If you’re not going to attach it to a bike, skateboard wheels should just as well.

That’s actually a pretty clever design.
