How much protective gear?

I have been riding to work on my Sem XL for the past six weeks now. I take
the public transit part ways and then ride the rest of the way. The round
trip is about 8 - 9 kilometres.

I ride mostly on the sidewalk along light industrial areas. The route also
offers a couple of nice bumpy vacant lots and a huge undeveloped chunk of
industrial land for off road fun. I generally stop about half way along for
a little practice idling and hopping.

I always wear a bike helmet riding. I prefer to wear padded mountain bike
gloves and sometimes wear my wrist guards. I have wondered if I should be
wearing my Roach ‘legs’ on this ride.

What would you wear on a ride like this? Am I being too casual and
possibly inviting an injury down the road by not wearing more protective
gear? And it hasn’t really been that rainy yet; do you think I should plan
on wearing the Roach legs when the slippery rainy season hits?

thanks,
Erin

This is very much an individual choice, and whatever advice you are given, the final decision is yours. You must find your own balance between safety, freedom, cred and comfort.

I have ridden long distances (up to 20 miles) on a 20 inch on public roads and paths, many miles of ‘light’ MUni on a 24 and 26, and many miles on roads and paths on a Coker. I’d guesstimate I’ve done about 750 miles this year (based on my only computer, on the 26, showing 260 miles since about April). I have only once hurt myself in a fall in 15 years of riding (not always covering the same annual mileage though!) and that was when deliberately going for top speed on the Coker with shorter cranks fitted. I body surfed at an estimated 20 mph and cut both elbows and both knees.

On this basis, I would say definitely wear a helmet and padded gloves. Everything else is optional if you are riding at sensible speeds on mainly flat surfaces.

When I ride more serious MUni, I wear knee pads or shin pads, and elbow guards, in addition to helmet and gloves.

Re: How much protective gear?

Of course it’s up to you, but I would be wearing a helmet and gloves or
wrist guards on a ride like that. No Roach pads.
