How many ounces is the Thompson Post

Hi,

Sometime this summer, I’ll be in the market for a new uni, via getting a job so I can afford one. I have my eyes on a couple posts, Odyssey and Thompson. The Odyssey Jims Bean is 16.2 ounces, and has a lifetime guarantee. I am curious if the Thompson is lighter.

I know this setup will sound like a dream to you guys, but here’s what I’m planning to build:

Kris Holm 24" MUni/Trials frame
Profile Drivetrain 170mm
Snafu Sealed Pedals
Spokes (whatever comes with the offroad wheelset on unicycle.com)
Sun Doublewide Rim
Nokian Gazzolodi (spelling?) Tube/Tire 3"
Magura Brakes
Brake Lever Extendor
Wilder Seat Post Rail Bracket
Thompson/Oddyssey seat post
Seat clamp that comes with frame or something else
Gemcrest Carbon Seat Frame (The ones built by Roger)
Roach Seat cover/ pillow with 20" tube
Miyata hardware for seat

I think that’s all.

Evan

The 27.2 Thomson (no p) Elite seatpost is 275 grams (9.7oz) at 410mm. I am
6’ tall and cut off over 100mm of it making it even lighter. Full specs
are at: http://www.lhthomson.com/seatpostdims.asp?id=SP-E113 I paid $60
including shipping from some bike shop. I give this post 5 thumbs up
(highest possible rating)!

Sounds like you’ll have a great uni. What’s the Magura Brakes Brake Lever
Extendor? If you’re using brakes, you might want to look into either the
DX32 or Zum rims which work better than the DoubleWide. I’m using the Zum
from Unicycle.com http://www.unicycle.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=459

7.3 oz (~.46 lb) for mine after cutting it

You have a nice list of options. I have used a doublewide with a brake for a while and it works pretty good once the rim is “broken in”.

After riding my new KH24 setup, I am in love with the Avro rim. I am using the “green” Magura pads that are a little more grippy than the black ones and designed for wetter weather (or so someone said or I read on the Magura site). Bottom line, I really like my setup.

I would recommend a Salsa seatpost clamp and the leather Gemcrest seat cover. The Salsa holds great and easily adjusts seat height. The leather seat cover fits nicely on the carbon seat frame and is extremely strong and comfortable with an air seat. Also, check out the Magura stainless brake line. I have broken the standard plastic brake line and the steel braided one is much stronger with very little weight!

If you haven’t already checked it out, I have plenty of pictures and weights of the components of my KH24.

Hi,

The Thompson post sounds great. I realized that the Odyssey won’t fit the KH 24, and it is much more heavier than the Thompson. So definitly Thompson it is.

Nathan: A brake lever extendor (available through unicycle.com) is used to enable braking of more than one finger. It attaches to the brake lever, and extends up and to either the right or left, depending on preference. Kris runs one, so he could probably tell you more about it.

Will the Zum take a good amount of abuse, like up to 10’ drops?

Bronson: I’ll take the Salsa, and Gemcrest into top consideration. I’ll probably go Roach for the cover, because I guess from word on here, that a revised model has been made. Can I get the steel brake cable through unicycle.com?

Evan

A couple of other issues with posts:

It’s important to have as low-profile a seatpost as possible, where it
clamps to the seat rails. Some seatposts are so bulky right here that they
interfere with gripping the seat for seat-out-in-front hops. In addition
to being the strongest seatpost, the Thompson is also the best post for
having a low profile clamp.

That brake lever extender is important and unfortunately hard to get since
bar extensions went out of style. Get one while you still can!

Hi,

I wasn’t planning to purchase the whole set-up that I wanted until summer (funding reasons), so if those extendors are out of style, how long do I have? Will another device ever be made? I’m sure someone (namely a unicyclist) could get some sort of device in the similitude made for riders to purchase.

thanx, for all the great help guys

Evan

The brake lever extenders have recently been added to the unicycle.com catalog. They are listed as “Delta XT Brake Lever Extender”. They are $10.

I have seen some custom made extenders. Scott Bridgman (a.k.a. Muniac) made a cool custom extender for his brake. It looked like his would work better than the Delta XT design. But it is a custom part and custom parts cost $$. His design was simple, but I’m sure it would be more than $10 if you wanted to buy one.

Keep in mind that between now and summer, when you can purchase your dream muni, things in the muni world can change. Someone might discover a better tire than the Gazz, seat technology might change, a new frame might be developed, etc. Your dream muni could go through several modifications between now and then.
