how many members in your national association

Do you have an idea of how many unicyclists there are in differents countries. As it’s difficult to know, the number of members of the national association could give an idea (it will be, of course, much less important)

I’d like to be abble to tell different people in France that unicycling is really developped in some other countries, and that one day it will be the same in France

In France, there are 123 members in the association but it is only a year and a half old

An’So

The Unicycling Society of America, Inc. currently has 1114 members in good standing.

Last month at UNICON XII, the President of the Japan Unicycle Association told me they had about 3000 members.

There are over 7800 registered users of this forum. Of course that’s worldwide.

Roster of unicyclists

The unicycling.org site keeps a roster of unicyclists from different countries. The roster depends on unicyclists adding their own names, but I suppose it’s a rough idea of numbers.

Have a look here: http://www.unicycling.org/roster/

In fact, thinking about it now, if you have 128 members and there are only 17 French unicylists listed on the roster, perhaps it’s a useless way of estimating numbers!

The Japan Unicycling Association claims six million people have learned to ride since they started around 1980. This may be a slightly optimistic estimate, but is probably not far off. I guess there are up to a million people in the USA who can ride unicycles, but most of them probably did it for a year or two then stopped.

To count the numbers means to also decide how much riding constitutes a unicyclist. I run into this problem all the time because reporters always want to know how many unicyclists there are out there. We don’t really have a good idea.

If the USA has 1100 members, and up to a million unicyclists in the country, this is also an indication that national organization numbers will only cover a fraction of the riders in any country.

Many users seem to have multiple usernames, also many users are
dormant or they even aren’t unicyclists. On the other hand, the vast
majority of unicyclists worldwide don’t use this forum.

About three or four Dutch unicyclists participate here (occasionally),
but I guess there are many thousands in the country who can ride. That
very roughly ties in with the factor 1000 multiplier that John Foss
implied.

Thanks for those figures.

I have to admit that the number of members in the national association may not be enough impressive for journalists (but good to know for me)

Julien Monney wrote 3 years ago in an article there was 1.5 million unicyclists in Japan (I don’t know how he had the information)

But as you say, John Foss, how can we decide how much riding constitutes a unicyclist…

There are 16 registered members of NZUNi (new zealand unicycling federation) but there is probably another 30-40 or so who are non-members. the organisation is around 3 months old…maybe less

UUU, the Union of Uk Unicyclists has 62 current members and a shocking
212 lapsed members . I think this is becasue lots of peoples membership ran out in July and they havn’t renewed yet, hint hint.
