How long did it take you to...

Be able to start hopping onto objects and jumping small gaps (1ft)

Re: How long did it take you to…

It took me about 4 and a half years before I could do that, but you will probably learn much faster than I did

i’m still working on that myself :frowning:

having a torker cx doesn’t help much either, as i think i’ve bent my wheel around a bit from the abuse

i had been riding for 5 years untill i got into trials, it took me 2 weeks of practice to jump 9 inches, 3 weeks more to 17 inch
my two friends learned to unicycle and could do that all in 3 1/2 months

I think about a week.

About 19 or 20 years.

I blame that on the fact that no one told me that you could jump while riding a unicycle before then.

Similar here… 12 years and I still can’t clear the 10x10cm obstacle for
level 3

I can ww, 1ft-ww, ride sif and sib, one foot, glide… but that 10x10cm
obstacle…

from never ridden a uni to success, 1.25 years to do a 1 - 2 ft drop and hop onto a 6 inch curb. I still can’t manage to do any real hops on a trail, like onto a tree, rock, etc. For now I mostly power over obstacles, but being graceful having more control is a big part of my goals in the future.

17 seconds! Oh, this is about hopping? Right, about a week

Ditto.

But it’s only taken me about 20 lbs to forget how.

from first trying to hop to hoping, 2 days

when i learned to ride after that it took me about a day

I believe the 10x10 obstacle is out of place as a level 3 skill.
Rolling over the obstacle takes more finesse and balance and control
than any of the other level 3 skills. It would be better at level 4 or
5.

Actually rolling over the 10x10 obstacle on a 20" freestyle uni is
tricky. I can’t manage it every time. Too tricky to get the pedals
just right or sometimes you slip because of no tire traction. The
original idea for that skill was to roll over the obstacle rather than
hop over it. Course they were more likely to be using 24" freestyle
unis back when the levels were made. Hopping over the 10x10 obstacle
is cheating IMHO.

I can roll over the 10x10 obstacle because I do a lot of muni which
involves rolling over rocks and roots and logs. If all you do is
freestyle in a gym then trying to tackle that 10x10 obstacle is going
to be a whole different world.

It doesn’t really bother me. I’m quite happy keeping my wheel on the floor

  • there’s plenty more to learn without ever doing the obstacle. When I did
try level three a few years ago, the object was a small block of wood
which had no non-slip properties. I think I thought it would just slide
away from me, causing a UPD, so I didn’t have the confidence to hit it and
    bailed out.

But anyway… as I said, and as John suggested, I’m not going to find a
10x10 obstacle on the gym floor, and it’s a different type of skill.

So I’ll ignore it for now.

When commuting, I’ve been rolling up lowered kerbs with no problem (maybe
up to 5cm), so it’s getting there… I just have no need for 10cm.
