Penny and I just got back from a week in the Caribbean aboard The Freedom of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world. With 4000 passengers, it’s almost like a floating city. You might have seen ads for it with it’s climbing wall and the Flowrider - a wave pool for surfing and boogie boarding.
Actually though pat, whats it like on a cruise ship, I always thought about suggesting that as a vacation, it looks like fun, but do you ever get bored? I mean how much on there is to do? And did you ever stop at a beach and go onto shore or no?
This was our first cruise and I don’t know why we waited so long. Our ski club celebrated its 60th anniversary the same year I turned 60 so we figured it was as good a time as any.
Yes, the trip was a blast. There were four shore excursions in Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, and Labadee but you could have had a terrific vacation without ever leaving the ship. The food was incredible (I put on 5 pounds) and the entertainment was of Broadway quality. We saw Rain - the top Beatles tribute band in the world, and an ice show that was mind boggling.
I spent a LOT of time on the Flowrider and frankly, it was tougher than I expected. Some kids could go all day but I rarely lasted more than 30 seconds surfing (the boogie board was easy). The trick is to keep your weight almost entirely on your rear foot and, as a snowboarder, it’s hard for me to do that.
I’d definitely recommend cruises for everyone, especially the Freedom of the Seas!
