how do you tuck

ive heard all these things about tucking but i dont know how or whether i can do it.

can you tuck on a freestyle (thin tire uni?)

the fact of the matter is…you really need to get a trials unicycle. you can probably jump up curbs and stuff, but that’s about it. any drops or high hops that involve slamming the uni down may just destroy the rim immediately. those thin tires and rims aren’t made for such abuse from drops and hops. trials tires have wayy more air to absorb impacts like that. on that thing your rim will be taking the impact…

so just wait till you get a trials to hop and work on something else, unless you don’t want to have a uni at all.

I think sidehops would be fine on a freestyle. It’s not ideal but you can still learn to tuck on it.Just step off the uni instead of dropping back down what you hopped up.I learnt to tuck by hopping onto something alot lower than my highest and bending my legs a little more each time.Eventually it becomes natural and you just keep getting higher and higher

your avatar shows that you know… :astonished:

and that was without a prehop

I learned to tuck by just doing SIF squats. Practiced doing those about 10 minutes per ride. Eventually I got to where I can almost touch my butt to my heels. I just need to work on getting more power from my legs and less from my upper body now so I can get higher haha

That’s a good idea. I’m going to try this

Do you push foward on the seat, and press back on the pedals so you have the whole uni in tension so you can pull it up? Or do you just bring your legs up and seat out infront?

start by just learning to do squats while holding your seat out front. Hold the seat and bend your legs, your body will naturally push the seat out of the way. get comfortable doing that and then do it when you jump.

I had a great problem - before I was jumping sit-in, but for about 4 months I jump sif only. I prefered flatland and street but now I have to progres in trials cause my younger brother beats me…

normally I got like 40-50cm high with sit in and now, when I want to jump with sif I can jump only 3cm higher…

I know my mistake - I don’t bend my legs when jumping on obstacle higher than 40cm. I have bad habit of pulling the uni up to my chest, bending in half with straight legs ;/
I have no idea how to loose this stupid habit…

When jumping on smaller obstacles (3 pallets) I do bend my legs quite often but when I want to get higher - no way. My body don’t want to cooperate. I just pull uni to my chest, legs straight…

Any tips how to fix this/ me :)?

greets

it’s because you’re trying to just bounce up there. lower your pressure, lower your height and begin actually learning to tuck by hopping with no prehop. when you practice static, youll learn to tuck. youll learn to bring up your legs by bending them(like almost sitting down) and not by throwing your upper body forward.

when you can hop at least 65-70cm static, you can start adding the prehop to your hops.

I have been doing this for a few weeks and Ive improved my static hop by 5cm

Thanks

No problem, I’m glad I could help.

that was my mistake before - I wanted to jump as high I as can with sit-in and it doesn’t matter, that I was doing it technically wrong… Now I have this problem.

My body is “used not to” bend my legs, but to pull uni do chest… I do squats a lot and jump static on 3 pallets. I’m getting better but still - when I want to jump on 4 pallets I do my old mistake.

It will take time I see…

Do You think that having less air in tyre will help? Or on my level it doesn’t matter so much?

Thanks for advice. Static only now.

it just takes a lot of time. i used to ONLY hop si as well. when i finally moved onto sif, i had the same problem. i was treating them just like si hops…throwing my upper body forward and trying to basically bend into a v.

AWFUL form. as you can see it almost looks like a static si hop.
but youll learn. you really gotta develop a lot of new muscles.

yeah it will def take time…and less tire will definitely help you get power from static hops.

i know everyone recommends sif squats…i used to do them as well. but i don’t anymore. i think they help return from the sif squat position. what i recently started was knee raises(google em, dont be thrown off by the name, it’s an ab exercise basically.), which are even better than situps, and that has helped my tuck so much. since it is a lot of your abs you use when you tuck…

Dschmitt thanks a lot for this, you’re really good at this, and so helpful! Now would you say it was better to get a new height and get that consistant or push myself constantly to get higher?
thanks
Ali

i treat it just like weight lifting. i used to try to get hops that i could only 1/10 times to 10/10 times. now…each hopping session…i’ll work on my consistent height like for like at least a half hour…then try my max only 3-4 times. everyones different though…you just gotta see what works for you.

I only recommend sif squats because it really helped me with my form. Knee raises definitely help with core strength and that is pretty important in a good hop. I also have started doing some of these exercises just to see if they really help I have friends to do track, volleyball, and basketball who do those exercises to gain vertical height on foot so I’m hoping they will help my jump height on unicycle too

I usually do the same thing. I’d rather not spend the whole time training to get a hop height consistent so I just ride stuff I’m good with for about half the ride then I spend a few minutes trying to hit my max height before moving back down to consistent stuff and ending my ride easy and fun.

yeah, exactly. that way, it ends up becoming even more of a workout and it’s fun. i would always end up frustrated when always trying to get my max consistent.
