Ok so, I used to jump with the handle on the front of my unicycle seat but i need to get higher. Then I saw that people that jump high use the side of the unicycle but there isnt a good handle to get a good grip so i jump about the same except im not as comfortable. Does anybody have any hints? I want to get onto a bench with it and maybe someday a picnic table but I need to know how first.
What you’re talking about is “seat in front” (SIF) hopping, which can get you up on to benches and picnic tables. Another style of jumping to get more height is the “rolling hop”, which can also get you onto benches and tables.
Armed with this knowlege and the ever-so-helpful search tool you should be able to read about the subject for days.
EDIT: Make sure you search in rec.sport.unicycling, that’s where all the unicycle talk is.
Ok i searched but there was no results from what I can see. It is mostly people talking about what they did. Can anybody help me with the SIF or my newly found out Rolling Hop.
I will.
First, how high can you jump with a regular set-in hop? You can actually manage a pretty good height with it before moving to another method, unless your already at that point.
Ok, with SIF, you will be holding onto the side of the seat, just like if you put your arms straight down to your sides while sitting in your comp chair and grab the edge trying to push yourself up, and you also want to hold onto more near the back, not directly in the middle cause the seatpost gets in the way, but just a little behind it. It also helps to have a thinner saddle.
Now you got your seat out there and your holding, but most likely, your gonna have trouble keeping you and the uni under control. To help with that, ride around SIF, at first your probably gonna be having the seat with a lot of pressure and almost jammed against your body, but as you get better you’ll be able to barely hold onto the seat and will be able to keep the seat far away from you and ride smoothly.
Lets start jumping shall we? First, start in a flat section and bring the seat out, get into the position that you jump in, left foot in front, or your right, and start doing some small hops, just to get used to the feeling, now start to really compress and tuck the wheel as much as you can by pulling the seat up to your chest. A good rider can hit his but with the tire and bringing the seat out almost to his face, that’s how much of a tuck you can achieve with SIF.
This amount of tuck can add inches or even feet to your jump height.
THANKS Jerrick:D Im going to try that when i wake up tomarrow because its 1:30
Your welcome, try not anything to big, maybe stacking up bricks and jumping over them, or onto pallets. Just keep working up to bigger obstacles.
I will write out a guide thingy for rolling hops soon for you.
Rolling hops.
Chances are, if you can do a seat-in static hop onto something, you can do a rolling hop onto, and also, rolling hops have the potential to get you going even higher.
The main thing to realize about rolling hops, or any* jumping done on a unicycle, is that the pedals have to be in the right position, either with the left foot forward, or your right. This is also what causes a lot of problems, but I will work on this later.
Lets get rolling, assuming you can already do a regular seat-in jump on your uni, all you gotta do is do that while rolling. Try to not go as fast when first learning, but a good regular riding pace, or somewhat slower is fine.
Ride along, and once you are ready and have the pedals in your position, pull up on your handle and jump up, while flinging the uni forwards with you to get more distance.
You may notice that you are stopping then jumping forwards and then continuing going forwards after you ride, this is ok, because if you keep practicing, it will turn into one smooth motion of riding, jumping, landing and still going.
Practice by jumping cracks in the road, sticks, curbs, pallets, taller ledges, and your jump height will keep getting higher and higher.
Watch this video, and look at these pictures to better see what I mean.
Okay, thanks! I think I’m going to work on the SIF hop first though.
