That’s actually the capital slashed O. For the lowercase slashed o, use ALT + 0248.

Windows has a Character Map application that displays all of the special characters including ø and Ø. The Character Map is in the Start Menu under Accessories → System Tools → Character Map.

So if I was looking for a character like “o with stroke” I’d use the Character Map to find it and copy it to whatever I was typing.

But if I wanted a really cool character like the interrobang ( ‽ ) I’d go to Wikipedia and copy it from there because it is one of the characters I cannot find in the Character Map (Character Map doesn’t display all of the available Unicode characters). There are third party freeware and shareware tools that will display more of the special characters, but I haven’t bothered to install one because I really don’t need something like that very often.

Sounds like you’re using a Mac. Do you know where I can find a listing of other keyboard shortcuts for special characters? So far I’m having to use the Character Palette (equivalent of Windows Character Map). I used to be able to type in all the circle-Rs and TMs for my web sites very quickly, now it’s more of a hassle…
