How did this advertising rear its head in my post?

I posted to the “Honored Guest” thread and used the words “chin up bar” in the post. Somehow, the phrase generated a url link to an advertisement for chin up bars. I did not create the link. How and why did it do that?

I just previewed this post and found that it happened again. I don’t like it. I’m not in to advertising for products in which I have no interest.

and Mary and the boys tried to stuff the uni under me. It was pretty comical.[/i]

Upon further thought, Gilby may be using the advertising to help support the forums. If that’s the case, I’ll put up with it. Gilby does us all good by this forum and does need the support. I don’t like having words put in my mouth but I am fully in support of supporting Gilby in his efforts.

On my screen, the words “chin up bar” (and also “chinup bar”) in your posts on that particular thread have no link to anywhere. Has the link been removed or what?

Klaas Bil

The only ads are the google adsense ads at the top of the page. What you have is some spyware that is adding those links to your page. You can remove that crap with something like ad-aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

I see no link in the original thread either.

I suspect it’s something the you have installed on your computer that’s adding the hyperlinks. Give the PC a good ad/spy-ware scan* and I’ll bet it’ll turn up something.

*I like webroot spy sweeper ™

Going to the domain in the code you posted, it has instructions for removal:

But you’ll also want to run a spyware removal as you probably have other junk on your computer.

If this is the case and you don’t like it, you could alway swap to using
a normal news reader instead of the web interface.

Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy are two popular (and free for home use) adware/spyware cleaners. There is a support forum at Lavasoft for help in using Ad-Aware. There is a tutorial over at Spybot S&D for help in using Spybot.

Hopefully the nastys haven’t dug in too deep. If there is a multitude of adware/spyware apps installed it can be messy to remove them.

Thanks for the help, guys. I ran the Ad-Aware software, lets see if it has done its job.

Yippee! No more ad links.

Well, there’s no advertisements in your posts, but you did manage to make two pullup bar advertisements appear in the “Ads by Goooooogle” box in the upper right.

Very interesting. Can’t hide from 'em, can’t outrun 'em. I really think it’s a conspiracy. I’m beginning to suspect that advertisements are really living, breathing organizisms secretly planning to eliminate the human race and take over the world.

The ads themselves aren’t, but the clever people figuring out how to get them in your face have financial motivations to do so.

That URL was from almost three years ago. The technology has come a long way since then! Take the Google Ad-Words at the top of forum pages. On my view of your thread, my two ads were for “Discount Pull-Up Bars” and “Chin Dip Station.” Pretty funny! But that’s just the smart people at Google (some of which are unicyclists) making software that tailors the ads based on the page content. So if there’s a thread about cookbooks, you’ll probably see ads for cookbooks up there.

Whatever else they are, they’re not as bad as telemarketers calling on the phone at dinner. Especially telemarketers that are obviously reading, and trying to pronounce, your name for the first time in their lives after you say hello. I just try to ignore the parts of pages that have ads on them, or to avoid the ads entirely when I can. They are a necessity here, to help pay for Gilby’s running of these forums.

But that’s why I prefer to pay for my own web site, and photo sharing site (smugmug); so I don’t have to put up with ads.

Tele-what-keters? I haven’t heard from one of them for ages. Sounds
like you should visit [https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx].

Now, tell me how to stop politicians and pollsters from interrupting
dinner and you’ll be my hero.

two words
‘Please hold…’

enjoy your dinner
:stuck_out_tongue:

Mary used to have a great strategy when a telemarketer or politician would call during the middle of the day. We ran a licensed day care home with 16 children for 10 years in the '90’s. When a telemarketer would call, Mary would set the phone down beside the child that was screaming the loudest and walk away.

Re: Re: How did this advertising rear its head in my post?

Ken, I was going to reply that I signed us up when that thing was first announced. But then I decided to check. I must have signed us up before our number changed! We changed phone services just a month or two before the law change that would have allowed us to keep the old number. I have signed us up with the new number, thanks to you!

These more recent calls seem to have started from the time we refinanced our mortgage back in November. Every kind of marketing that exists on this earth, mostly for mortgages and the thing we already did, has hit us from all angles. Plus all the stuff you’d get if you just moved to the area, because the new loan is registered with the county, and apparently you can’t do anything about that. So everyone is offering us alarm systems, lawn service, etc. The coupons are nice though.

All of this is with a functioning Tele-Zapper on our phone as well. That thing works great, but only for automated calls. The ones that get through seem to be Tele-Zapper-proof. There is always a delay after picking up the phone, followed by a “greeting” by someone who is obviously looking at our name for the first time in their lives. It’s amazing how many people can mis-pronounce “Foss,” and less amazing how often these poor, semi-literate people mess up on “Jacquie.”

As for the poplitical and polling calls, which for me includes the many requests for donations to police-related organizations (which are often not connected with your local police dept.), they’re all telemarketing to me.

Here’s my telemarketer test. To find out if the call counts under my definition of telemarketing, ask the caller if they’re selling anything. If the answer is no, or anything other than yes, it’s a telemarketing call. Sounds stupid? Try it. You’ll be amazed!

Off-Topic, Linux has no Spyware… On-Topic, Large Marge Rim with KH/Onza hub?

For my completely off-topic response, Linux has no spyware.
On the downside, Linux is harder to learn than Windows.
But how much time and money do you save having a system with no spyware, that doesn’t crash, that gives you bunches of applications for free?
Right, I’ll take my geeky self outside for more unicycling…

Obligatory On-Topic Unicycling Content:

I swapped email with surlybikes.com, they said the 24 inch Large Marge Rim will be ready to ship in a month or two.
I’d like to try that rim with the KH/Onza hub and crankset in my KH24 2004 frame.
Does that sound like it’ll work? Any obvious problems with that setup?
Since this will be the first wheel I’ve built, what’s the best quality spokes and nipples I can get?

Thanks,
