Okay, before you all start hitting me up with how dumb my question sounds, I need the actual diameter. The size molded into the side of a tire may or may not be close to its actual size.
This is in regard to trying to start up a new unicycle racing class for 700c wheels. We need to determine a good diameter to set as the upper limit. This should be based on the kinds of tires people are currently using, or on what’s available on the market.
Anyone who can measure the acutal diameter (or rollout/circumference) of their tires, please post them here!
The biggest 29" tyre currently is the big apple 29x2.3. It’s a slickish tyre and would probably make a great racing tyre.
in this thread Steve Howard says the rollout is 91.25", which makes it about 29.05" diameter.
I’d suggest measuring a Yuni/Nimbus II 28" frame and allowing the fattest tyre that will fit in that as it fits all commonly used 29" tyres. It’d also give you a cheap and easy way to test that tyres are the right size at races.
I was wondering about the age bracketing, as it is now there are 5 mandatory age classes, and the example break down is into 12 seperate classes.
This year at NAUCC the 400m race had 8 seperate classes for age and then it also was divided into Men and Womens, thats 16 classes to run for each event. That seems like a ton to 1 keep track of and also alot of medals to give out. A complant I have heard from people before. For example there would be 48 things given out to the 1st 2nd and 3rd place competitors if they were each to recieve something.
Now why is this, in other sports, like 2 wheel cycling they have a limit of 5 age classes,
under 10
10-18
19-22
23-29
30+
Now I’m not saying this is the best break down for our sport, just an example of what other cycling orginizations compete with. With a limit on a 5 age brackets there would be shorter awards ceremonies (18 less medals per event as compaired to NAUCC this year) and more of a championship feel to the events in my opinion.
Now I havent had the chance to go to an Event that has Unicycle races in it. So I could be totally wrong about this.
So how do you guys feel about the current age breakdown for NAUCC and UNICON events.
The situation with age groups for required USA and IUF racing events is worse than previously stated in this thread. Here are the actual numbers from NAUCC 2002 and UNICON 11:
NAUCC groups per each required racing event: 24
(11 age groups + Expert for male and female)
NAUCC required racing events: 10
UNICON goups per each required racing event: 18
(8 age goups + Expert for male and female)
UNICON required racing events: 7
Total NAUCC 2002 awards purchased: 1565
Total UNICON 11 awards purchased: 1712
If anybody is interested, I can send a copy of the detailed awards matrices (in Excel) upon request.
NAUCC and UNICON have two different sets of age group requirements, so keep that in mind. Both can be too many, depending on the number of participants, and their breakdown by age. The USA system is out of control, and usually leaves lots of medals/ribbons left over after all is said and done because some of the 11 age groups per sex go unfilled. IUF is better, requiring a minimal set of age groups, which is often added to by convention hosts. But at least those hosts have the choice.

Personally, having now been to a NAUCC with exactly one unicycle
(Miyata 24"), I feel that it would be counterproductive to have a 29"
racing class for track races. Having a 29" category would not require
more skill, would not be noticably more interesting to watch, and would
cause significant hardship to the folks who don’t want to buy and
bring extra unicycles to compete. (Notably, the Puerto Ricans–I can’t
compete anyway).
Do the racing events really need to take twice as long as they do now?
I think there are enough.

The USA, Inc. is working on correcting the problem with racing. A USA Rulebook Committee is starting soon to accept proposals on how to get racing on track.
The proposal we’re working on revamps the system to encourage more people to participate – from beginners to experts – with less waiting around time, yet there will be fewer medals. It also helps smooth out problems caused by the huge age range we’re dealing with.
As soon as we can finalize the proposal, we’ll get the USA Rulebook Committee going.
and sport category for even bigger kids or under 16s who want to compete against adults.
At bicycling events I’ve been to, the masters / veteran or whatever, categories for elderly people haven’t been much slower than the sport category at all, it always seems like people just enter them because they have a smaller field to compete against so they can get a higher placing.

You made some valid remarks. OTOH, as a recreational 29’er rider I
would find it interesting to see (or know) how fast real racing
specialists could go. Including a 29’er category reflects the current
trend to larger wheels in the speed/distance discipline of our sport,
so it makes the races more ‘relevant’.

I have a Big Apple 28 x 2.35 on a Nimbus wheel; tyre pressure 2.5 bar.
The rollout, unloaded, is 233 cm, equivalent to 91.75". That makes the
diameter 74.2 cm, or 29.2". All numbers slightly rounded.
