I just learned how to “hop on the tire” and thought I would tell you guys
about it! Has anyone else learned this skill? Did you find it hard?
anything… later.

This was one of the tricks that annoyed me a bit recently. The landing on
the pedals was the hardest part to master. I thought I had that down to
the point where I could land it properly over 95% of the time.
A few weeks ago, I was on stage for the first time in my life. Included in
my routine was the hop-on-tire trick. Well, that day, I was giving the
routine a few quick run-throughs before the show. When I got to the hop on
tire part, I missed hte landing. I tried again, and missed the landing. In
fact, I missed 7 times in a row before I gave up. Maybe I’ll be ready
again the next time I perform

I was a big pogo sticker as a kid and found this skill WAY easier than
wheel walking. I understand that others found it the other way around,
which is still mind-boggling to me. After all, WW requires a lot of
balance, and hopping on the wheel is just about transitions.
I started by getting good at hopping on the wheel by itself, not having
gotten to that position from the pedals; I started with one or no feet on
the tire and jumped on and started hopping. After a few hours, this was
easy. Then I practiced the transition from the pedals to the wheel. This
took awhile but was not too hard – mainly scary. The hardest part of this
skill is landing it. I initially considered the technique where you coolly
slide the uni 90* to one side as you get a foot back on its pedal, but I
only got this a few times and gave up trying. It’s not hard to jump back
to the pedals – just scary at first. I occasionally run into the problem
of having the wheel rotate a bit too much while hopping, and since I can’t
correct for this, I just hop to the ground and make it look like that’s
the natural conclusion to the skill.
