hopping & fingers

Obviously I’m getting too much fun on my 20’’ monty but … I now get more
and more sour / injured fingers after lotsa hops. I even get to the point
I can’t flex some fingers the day after the practice and I have to ‘spare’
one hand to be able to use it next time. That problem is occuring now 7
days a week :frowning:

Am I the only one with delicate fingers ? If no, what do you suggest to
ease that problem (ice/massage/drugs ?) ?

Do your hands have big brown dead skin underneath your skin? If It is I
got told to put some gaffa tape under the seat…So far so good. the skin
has stoped getting browner and sore.

I had the same problem - the Miyata seat handle is anti-ergonomic. If you
get some athletic tape and bunch it up pretty thick and tape over and over
the handle, you can drastically improve it. I recommend black or other
dark color - as a side benefit, you can get rid of the ugly green.

Maybe equipment. What are your fingers grabbing? If you are having this
problem even tho you have a Miyata seat with the front extention, then I
recommend drugs – maybe Prozac to calm yourself down. Actually, we all
have the same problem with the Miyata seat when holding on to one of the
sides (which are so much less forgiving than the front). I sorta rotate
tricks so that I use different places to grab every few minutes. If you
are jumping while seated and are holding the front, then try this for
short jumps and hops: Don’t hold the seat at all – just use the ol’ thigh
squueze. You’d be surprised how high you can jump w/o any help from your
hands. I think I can get up at least 8" on my Monty.

Have you tried padded cycling gloves. Some of the downhill cycling gloves
have padded fingers which I imagine would make things a lot nicer. I keep
meaning to buy some but they wouldn’t fit with my wrist guards and I’m
more worried about broken wrists than bruised fingers at the moment.

I know EXACTLY what you mean. I haven’t tried any pain killer (since it’s
not really painful, but the lack of movement the next morning and the fear
of getting arthritis later on that really bothers me) but equipment
definitely helps. Athletic tape on the Miyata bumpers definitely helps. At
this point I’ve given up on Miyata altogether (except I do still run a
Miyata post) and gone with a mtb grip on the front and a carved balsa
block on the underside.

There’s a picture (minus the air pillow and Roach cover) at

With the new gear my fingers are still a bit stiff some mornings, but they
don’t lock up at the joint like they used to.

I’ve also had this problem after extended hopping with the seat between my
legs (holding the front of the seat) or seat out front (holding the centre
of the seat). I assume it’s because my Viscount seat has very narrow lips,
so I am forced to bend my fingers around a lot. THen the force associated
with pulling up with my crunched over fingers creates the pain.
