I’d like to start practicing that skill but I am wondering if it is too
early for me. According to IUF skill level, I’d be level 2. I like
hopping though and what makes me thing that I’d be able to do it is that
I learned how to hop (level 3) before I was able to free mount (level
1). Is hopping on the wheel a skill that can be achevied before working
on IUF level 6 ?
You can hop on the wheel without being able to ride a unicycle.
I’ve taught a couple of kids to do it before they learned to ride.
Just jump on and treat it like a pogo stick (keep the saddle nto the body as
much as possible)

hopping on the wheel is not so difficult as it looks. The best to learn is to jump from the side on the wheel and hold the seat with both hands at the ends. Later you can try to hop and to jump then quickly sideways on the wheel.
My Tip: Look the universe video. Dan Heaton know how it works
I have just learnd this skill, and acording to the IUF skill levels i think i would be a level 5. but have not been tested in any formal way. anyway the thing that helped my the most was remember, when you are jumping up to the wheel, to keep your feet together. you want them to land right next to the frame on both sides.
When practicing hopping on the wheel just be careful that you don’t accidentally put your heel through the spokes. I tried hopping on the wheel about 2 years ago. The uni fell forwards and I ended up standing on the side of the wheel breaking a few spokes. Oops. Just something to be careful of. I haven’t tried hopping on the wheel since. I should give it another try.
I’ll work on it. I visualised it before and getting on the wheel does
not
seem to be a problem but what I fear de most is getting off the wheel
and
back to the pedals. I do know what happens when one feet gets on the
pedal
and the other does not… I plan to work on jump mount as a
prerequisite
for hopping on the wheel…
You can try the hopping part. Getting in and out of it is the hard part. In order to get into it, you’ll need to learn to hop seat out in front (unless you find another way to get into it).
The levels are meant to show people a typical order of skills to work on and you can skip around if you want to. The levels also serve as a way to allow unicyclists to compare where they are at in comparison to others and also to recognize and reward unicyclists for passing them.
