Hi all,

Having recently done some swapping around with my unicycle I have managed to get a 29" wheel on a hookworm into a 27.5 rgb with plenty of clearance.

I’ve have a hookworm on a 26" unicycle which i don’t find to suffer the known camber issues but the 29" is not great.

What 29" fat ,slick hookworm equivalents are out there ?

Thanks

My pick would be the Schwalbe Big Apple. It’s actually sold as a 28x2.35. It fits on a 29” rim. It has a soft ride

You have a large selection of other tires with smooth tread and around the 2.5 size:

- Schwalbe Big One 2.5 (lighter than the hookworm)
- Maxxis Grifter 2.5 or 2.4? (lighter than the hookworm)
- Pirelli Angel GT 2.4 (about the same weight)

It all boils down to availability, budget and the difficult science of what would best fit your skills/situation/pressure preferences 🤣

I had the Schwalbe Fat Frank on my 26" for some time and I loved it.

Thank for your suggestions, the schwalbe big apple and maxxis grifter seam easily available.

How does the grifter do on the camber front ?

I have a grifter on my UDC 29 trainer I find it to be camber sensitive. I haven’t ridden it for awhile, it could be the pressure I was riding, 35 psi.

Ooh dear so the grifter is camber sensitive like the hookworm is then which is a shame.

If you have one give it a try. At 35 psi I was definitely struggling with camber issues.

I don’t have a grifter yet as I am looking for a replacement for the hookworm that isn’t so camber sensitive. The search continues….

There aren’t many equivalents to the Hookworm, except maybe the GT Smoothie, but I’m not sure if it’s any better… I have 24”, 26“, and 29” Hookworms, and I think they’re great (for freewheeling). For me, the Hookworm is one of the only slick tires that works well on wide muni rims. I think that among 29x2.5 tires, this is the one that’s least affected by camber.

If you don’t mind slicks, there is a WTB thickslick 29" x 2.2"
Schwalbe also has the BigBen Plus 29" x 2.25"
I ride Squad Rant in 20", but they make a 29" … I love it. I mostly ride in parking lots.
Haven’t ridden either, but if you squint at the pictures they look vaguely hookwormy.

the schwable hurricane is a nice tire for a 29er. relatively smooth in the center with some tread on the sides for some grip when you need it.

For no particular reason I’d like to stay as wide as possible, as its looking like theres no real options to the hookworm il try different pressures on the one I have and see if it changes the camber sensitivity. Toutestbon that’s great to hear that the hookworm is good for freewheeling on , my freewheel is 27.5 so I might get one to try so that’s another story.
