hole needed in bottom of seat tube?

Do you need to leave the bottom of the seat tube open when building a Muni frame?

thanks

Unless you want to have to tip it upside down every time it fills with rain water, or every time you ride through a ford deeper than about 3 feet.

Joking apart, you will notice that on a conventional bicycle, the seat tube goes down to the bottom bracket where it is closed off. I see no reason why a unicycle should be different.

You will lose some degree of adjustment in the seat height - presumably not a problem on a custom muni. On the other hand, the bottom of the seat post will never foul the tyre when the seat is set low!

You will eliminate the amount of crud thrown up the bottom of the tube, which I suppose is good.

The point about water getting in from the top is valid, except that the top of the seat post will presumably be closed. (I say this as 3 of my unis have closed tops to the seat post, but 2 have conventional cycle seat posts.

It will look neater.

Re: hole needed in bottom of seat tube?

Actually, at least on my bike frame, there was a small hole (about 4mm)
drilled into the seat tube. However, since the bottom bracket presses fairly
tightly against the surrounding tube, I doubt this hole was for water
drainage. In either case, you could drill a very small hole which would
allow water to escape and minimize mud build-up.

On My Muni I have no problems with a holeless seat tube area. It is
however, good to have holes between the fork blades and the crown, assuming you
are using all tubing, no blocks.

RE: hole needed in bottom of seat tube?

I like to put my finger up the seat tube to feel the position of the seat
post when adjusting the seat height for different members of the family. I
find this to be my easiest way of remembering the best position for each
person.

You have a promising future as a proctologist. Remind me not to ride a relay with you at NAUCC/UNICON.
