hockey sticks

Hi all,

In /pub/Unicycling/games/hockey/mail-articles.Z there is an old thread about
what to use for hockey sticks. Well, I had to think about this recently as I
am building a uni-hockey team in the Reading area (UK)

I used the base of ice-hockey sticks, which are often discarded when old or when
the shafts break. I baught some wood (1" by 1=") to use as new shafts. Then with
some spare sheet metal a friend had I made a sleeve into which the shaft and
base would fit, drilled 4 holes through the sleeve, (two through the base part
of the sleeve & two through the upper part of the sleeve for the shaft) then
bolted the thing together. Lastly covered the bolts/nuts with tape to save
ankles etc.

They have lasted a good few months so far.

We are putting a team in for Hastings in May, anyone else on this list going?
Then of course there’s Eurocycle !! Can’t wait.

Speaking of Unicycle Hockey, does anybody in the North America play hockey?
Here in Minnesota we have started a unicycle hockey team. The kids seem to
like it lot. It can really improve the balance not to mention the workout gets
me in shape.

I’m director of the Unicycle Hockey tournament at Unicon here in Minneapolis.
This is the first year that Unicycle Hockey is being played as an offical event
at Unicon. So far a German Unicycle Hockey team will be coming over to play.
While over in Germany two months ago a group of us got to play with them. They
are really good.

For those of you who are going to the EuroCycle, I would like very much for an
update on how the hockey tournament goes.

If that’s the same German Unicycle Hockey team that I know, then look out for
the Chinese (sic) guy that builds his own unicycles. I had a go on one that was
about the same height as a 5ft, and there were FOUR wheels on it arranged in a
cross like this:

              \_/
               |
               |
             _(_)_ <-- pedals on this wheel (_)_(_) (_)

The wheels were touching so that as the bottom one rotated, it made the others
rotate in turn.

Not too difficult to ride, but you get some funny looks!

I was considering going down there for the Saturday. I won’t be playing hockey
though - the team I’ve been trying to pull together has been reduced to one.
Anybody in the Birmingham (UK) area looking to join a team? Maybe that should be
“anybody in the Birmingham area got a team that I can join?”

Er, never heard of it. What, when and where’s that then?

Mark.
