Now I wanna go shoot something.
I was a bit dissapointed in some parts of this movie.
Given that I’m not really into action films, and didn’t have very high expectations to start, that doesn’t say much for it.
I had to see this film, because I’ve been addicted to the game since I got it in 1995. I still play it regularly. Doom absolutely rocks. Doom 2 was good, too…doom 3 didn’t do as much for me.
The movie doesn’t stick to the plot of the game at all…which is good, since the game had virtually no plot. There was a page in the manual explaining the story background…I’ll attach that to this post. In the movie, none of that applies…there is no Deimos or Phobus moon base at all, and the monsters are not imps from hell. I think that Doom 3 (a remake of the first game, rather than a continuation of the story) might have the same plot as the movie, but I can’t remember.
So, they decided to make a movie out of a game that had no characters except the first person shooter, no names, and no plot except to kill everything. What a great idea.
So, my main dissapointment: it’s a bit slow at times. It needs more action. It also wasn’t very bloody/gorey. I figured the movie would basically live off those two things, but they actually made an attempt at some plot development. Too much, perhaps…at least for this cast.
The music wasn’t very good, either…not really creepy music. Nothing to make you tense in the dark scenes where you know someone’s about to get eaten…just not suspensful enough.
And while there were no unicycles, there was a type of dicycle, which is about as close as we can hope to get in mainstream Hollywood.
There were some funny references to the game that most people probably won’t get (character’s named after the programmer of the original game, etc.)
Special effects were good, but not enough.
That said, there were some good moments in the movie, and despite my local theater raising ticket prices again upon the opening of this movie, I certainly don’t regret it.
Compared with some of the other action films devoid of any plot or dialog or anything other than blood (coughBlackHawkDowncough), this certainly isn’t the worst thing to come from hollywood. I just don’t see any “best screenplay” oscars coming up.
It wasn’t that it was aweful and had nothing to offer…it just needed more of what it had. More blood, guts, jokes, special effects, hot girls and chainsaw to cover up the lack of plot and especially acting.
No, the rock can’t act. At all.
SPOILER as if there was a plot…
The best part of the movie is when the guy goes on a rampage and kills everything. This part is shot in First-Person shooter video game style…comeplete with the gun in the middle bottom of the screen, just like the game, with the camera work very accurately mimicing that of the game.
Was it better than the trilogy of books that came out in the mid '90s? The 1st two weren’t that bad (but not that good either) and the 3rd tried to get all metaphysical and philosophical or something (apparently humans are unique because we die?)
