I’m a 38 year old austrian and started to learn riding the unicycle last year (while i was living in a carvan on dutch campsites for one year).
I started learning with my girlfriend and until know we own 4 unicycles (3 x 20" and 1 x 24"), freemount is no problem, straight lines and corners are no obstacle any more, and we already did some drops (from the sidewalk approx. 10 cm.)
Next thing on the agenda will be to hop and/or to idle (still have to dismount at crossings) and to jump (getting of the sidewalk is easy, getting on the sidewalk again would be nice).
After reading many threads and looking at many cool pics here i finally decided to register.
Yeah, we started quick with our collection (the virus really got us).
The first uni (no name 20" for 39 €) was o.k. to learn with, but soon we discovered that the saddle was crap so we started looking for another saddle (no problem in netherland, every bike-shop, and you have at least one in even the smallest town, has unicycles there).
So we bought a new saddle (fishbone unicycle) and the 24" Qu-Ax (saw it standing in the shop, tried to mount and ride it, instatly fell in love).
As soon as i was able to freemount, and my girlfriend to free ride, we decided that we need a second 20", looking for used ones on ebay as well as new ones. We ended up buying the 20" Qu-Ax luxus for me and a used 20" fishbone (bright red frame, bright red rim) for my girlfriend.
Now my girlfriend is already thinking about getting a 24" for herself, and i’m dreaming of 26" or maybe 29", maybe Muni or Cross. Sooner or later there has to be a 36" and eventually a Guni. (btw. there aer some crazy austrians building 44" - 50" unicycles http://hochrad.wuk.at/einrad/michael.php )
Hi!! I hope the seats are padded on the 50" uni, as running on a solid tire for any distance has got to make your teeth loose I’m new too but hello!!! at about the same stage as you! But with two sons who are now way ahead of me!!
Oh how i envy those kids, picking up the necessary movement skills so quick. Well i have to admit that i wasn’t much into sports before, my girlfriend is much more trained and aware of all the muscles you have to use. On the other hand it’s kind of like learning to walk and run, you simply have to stop reacting the way you normally do, be open minded.
Having others ride around with you on their unis too us great fun, i do enjoy the unicycle every time i ride but most i do enjoy riding with my girlfriend beside on her unicycle.
I hope to get to know some of the members here, some are in vienna where i work, have seen many photos from fantastic trails not far from where i live, i’m looking forward to longer rides, some footpath through the nearby woods.
There are lots of interesting/helpful people on here. Have you read ‘learning jounals’ from dudewithasock and also notsoyoungone (nsyo). They are good.
And remember (YCNHTMU)…
Hi Byc and welcome…this site has been a great help and support to me as over the last two years. You are lucky to have a riding companion…good luck to both of you.
