Hi Def challenge: Canon HV30 vs Sony HDR-HC9

Found this quite interesting. I was leaning towards the canon, and now I’m sold on it!

Yea you’ll be real happy with the canon.

But that video may be rigged. They could of just underexposed the sony and set the focus to auto. I can’t imagine a high end camera as the sony to focus that poorly.

If you click on the top bar of the imbeded video above, it will take you to the vimeo page with details about how and why they did the comparison. The guy who actually shot that video ended up buying the sony! But yeah I think both are great cameras!

“was looking all over for something like this when i was shopping. my buddy has the Canon, and i ended up buying the Sony…just put this one together for the community…”

Nice. I usually look at the stats of equipment, to comapre things like chip size before looking at reviews or video demos.

Yep, I did all that first. I’ve probably spent a solid 4 hours over the past few days reading TONS of reviews and websites (like CNET, testfreaks) on these two camcorders. I tend to do extensive research; so much that often I get bogged down in the details, finding it hard to make a final decision sometimes. :o But I also have a pretty structured and ordered way of going about certain things, from making videos to my work. I’m a bit of a perfectionist, (which I hate, lol) and in my case that means I’m rarely satisfied with anything haha. But I try.

The canon vixia hv30 has some amazing features including 30p which effectively “deinterlaces” the footage, which is make to order for YT and Vimeo! Also 24p cinema option which gives the video a real “film” quality look. Also, the still camera mode takes 3.2 MP at FIVE SHOTS PER SECOND! Plus a hot shoe inteface for a boom mic, light, etc. Also it has a 43mm lens which accepts a wide angle and telephoto lenses! And it has firewire, yes!

24p is usually the frame rate used for a film like look and feel.

lol yeah 'twas a typo and fixed.

Terry be careful with shooting in 24p, I used to shoot in it and without post color correction it will wash out all the colors in your video. Many of my videos have been ruined because I wasn’t aware it was doing this.

For the hv30 I would recommend getting a rode videomic, and a wd-h43 lens.
I have both and it makes the overall video 10 times better.

Yeah I will definitely get the mic and wide angle lens, and mostly shoot in HD 30p, which will look awesome online! The 24p is cinema frame rate, but still interlaced.

So what are you going to buy? What’s the best value?

Billy

Yea I wish the canon hv20 shot in 30p. Are you running vista because how have you been uploading in hd with windows movie maker?

This one.

The video here sold you on the Canon? Are they both $899.00?

(By the way, I think you  is a typo, or you’re misusing it. I use it when I make a joke).

Whichever one does a better progressive mode would be the way to go, especially for anything that is going to end up as a computer video. Interlaced video was developed by the devil.

Wait a minute!

John Childs believes in the devil??!!

John Childs believes the devil has supernatural computer and tech skills??!!

PS: Next month all the new video equipment is coming out, after the big Show in Las Vegas this month.

You may want to wait to buy,

It might also be better to check the camcorder ratings of various brands. There’s no better way to know the pros and cons than by reading the expert reviews. With that, you can be sure that you’re getting the best value for your budget.

Just got my HV30 moments ago! I also got a 5 hour battery, and a clear lens filter, and wide angle lens that arrives Friday. I’m going to best buy to get a mini SD memory card and some DV tapes.
