Help me learn to cycle in nj or oh!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, this is finally something that I hope to get some headway on. I’ve been trying to find a unicycling teacher for the last couple of weeks ever since I returned to the US from Beijing. I am really interested in learning how to unicycle before I go to college in August and I was hoping that there would either be a group or somebody willing to give lessons around Montclair, NJ. I drive so a half hour distance wouldn’t be too bad, maybe a bit more.

I will also be attending college in Ohio during the rest of the year. I’ll be in Delaware, OH, and unless things go perfectly, I’ll still be looking for a group or a teacher. Transportation may not be so available then though.

Anyway, if there’s anybody out there from either New Jersey or Ohio that knows of a unicycling group, or knows somebody who gives lessons, please help me out! I really wanna get my wheel sometime soon.

As someone who’s just learned to ride, I’ll toss in my $0.02.

Just do it. Watch a few videos, read the “How-to” docs, get suited up and try it. It’s not brain surgery and with all the practice that’s required, maybe you can get the basics before finding a uni teacher. Then you can get guidance on some of the finer points of unicycling.

I’m about a month into the sport (self taught with help from this forum) and have managed a few rides longer than a km. There’s lots to work on but I’m pleased with my progress so far and will keep working on it whenever I get the chance.

Go for it and good luck.

I would think 90% of people on this forum taught themselves. Many did it in complete isolation, with no videos to watch, genreal info or knowledge of the wider unicycle community. With all the resources available you really don’t need a teacher.

  1. Set your seat height correctly
  2. Sit up straight
  3. Keep your weight on the seat
  4. Look far ahead
  5. Relax

That’s about all anyone can tell you to be honest, get out there and have fun!

Oh and btw this is “Just conversation”, for genreal chatter. Rec.sport.unicycling is the place for unicycle threads, you’ll get you far more replies if you post in there.

Learning to ride

Since you live in north jersey, stop by Grants Tomb and spend an afternoon with the New York Unicycle club. It will be time will spent. Check out their website.
Good luck.

This, and, no, there is no correlation between the number of exclamation points in your thread title, and how quickly you’ll get a response. One is enough.
