Help from any NY unicyclist?

Hi, I’m about to fly to New York, about to start college in fall. I’m thinking of bringing my uni there, 29" with 100mm cranks. The thing is, I’ve never been to New York and am not sure about the conditions there. I’d assume cycling in the city would be insane, would it? I’ve heard something about being able to cycle the borders of the boroughs or something but I have no clue.

Which is why I’m calling for advice here!

I’m into exploring the city, and am somewhat proficient, I guess. I can idle on my 29", hop a round a little, able to e-brake to avoid running over little kittens and children, and can cycle really slow in heavy human traffic, though people would probably keep a distance from me and I’d probably walk if that’s the case anyway.

Btw I’m from Singapore, and a holler to all RTL-ers out there as well! Hello from Team Masticating Bunnies from Hell!

Help would be greatly appreciated!

Contact club leader David Stone, of the Centurions! He and others there can get you acquainted with the local unicycling community.

I have ridden around in NYC and in Singapore. You’ll sweat a lot less in NYC, winter or summer! It’s possible to ride in the street or sidewalk, depending which is less hazardous at the time. I’ve done both. Though it’s really fun to zoom down crowded sidewalks (I did it on a 24") and dodge people like they’re traffic cones, they may not appreciate it.

The city is very large, and has lots of yukky spots, so use caution. Generally the unicycle is very disarming, and makes people friendly even in the worst of neighborhoods. Just don’t act like a tourist. “Locals” are from every country on Earth, so having an accent (or even not being able to speak English at all) is not an issue; just act like you’ve been there a hundred times before.
