Help!! cycle computer question ?

I went to my LBS and wanted a cycle computer. They had a few different cateye’s but when i asked how to set the wheel dia for my 36er he said that it wouldnt go that high. What does everyone else use and do to solve this problem ? Thanks,

Your options:

  1. Buy a different cycle computer which does allow for a 36"wheel.
  2. See if you can get another magnet. Put the two magnets opposite each other and set the wheel dia for 18" diameter.
  3. Don’t use a cycle computer at all, but one of those GPS wrist devices. They are more versatile but more expensive too, and sometimes less accurate.

Information on the best diameter setting for cycle computers on 36" wheels is here: The rollout of a Coker wheel

I have a cateye enduro 8 on my 36’er. It goes high enough.

thats the one i was looking at ! the LBS guy said 700cm was max

hey ducttape how do you like the cateye ?

i like it, no problems with it ever, and it’s survived a lot of crashes. I have my cateye set at 276cm(2768mm) and i run a Airfoil rim with a TA tire on it at about 40 PSI, if that helps at all.

That helps alot ! one question, the 276cm is it measured as if you took a tape and wraped it around the tire ? This is what i was saying to the LBS guy
but he made it sound like i was wrong and you just entered your rim size, 36
Thanks a bunch !

you put in the rollout distance of one revolution, mine was measured by a measuring tape along the ground as I rode alongside it one revolution.

Fourth option: Check if the LBS guy is right. Because it sounds like he isn’t.

Measuring tape around the tyre is not a good method. Ducttape’s method is a good one. The link I gave (now quoted) calculates the rollout for you.

yes sounds liie he may well be talking crap, the only real way to tell is to stick the battery in and then see how high the setting will go, both my cheapo halford’s brand comps will go significantly larger than 36". Or just get a second magnet.

That is very cool. I entered my info and saved it so i will go back their this weekend. Thanks for all the help!
