Hi im new here and new to unicycling. I have a few questions. The first is about seat height. Should i have the seat about how i would have it on a bike with my knees a little bit bent or do i need it a bit lower on a uni? My second Question is when im just going straight i curve a little to the left. I was just wondering if that would be from my inexperience?

Hello and welcome!

Firstly, your seatpost should be just about long enough so your legs do not bend when you are learning. It will make it steadier to ride.

and as for curving, you can curve that by practice :slight_smile:

just keep going, when you start just try to ride, dont worry about actually aiming anywhere and then all of a sudden you will nearly run in to something like a curb, small rodent, nanna and turn yourself. lean into the turn and guide with your hips.

Its funny you mention the curving to the left problem. I too am a beginner and I am curving but for me its to the right. I think its just our lack of experience.

Yeah… keep at it… you will eventually just go as straight as you want…

Small chance its the uni… I had my starter uni, and I always tended to go to one side… and my right leg got a much bigger workout than my left… then I upgraded, and now I tend to go the other way and my other leg is getting the workout… (maybe I am just catching my weak leg up to my strong one… /shrug)

I’ve ridden a few days on the new one tho and its evening out…

Thanks for the advise. I got back out there tonight for about an hour. I found that if i look a little farther ahead i go a little straighter. I experimented with different seat heights and im find i do the best with my knees more bent than on a bike.

This seems to be a BIG key when first learning to ride. Look to where you are headed and focus on that spot way out in the distance. :slight_smile:

Look only two feet in front of you and that is about how far you will get when you are first learning.

I had this curving isue too. I cured it by practicing a lot of circles in the opposite direction.

i Made some imporvment in the last two days. first i discovered that the seat was croked so i fixed that problem. I also raised the seat up about an inch. Those two things helped me go a lot straighter. I also learned how to freemount. I also experimented with going off the pavement and in to my yard. I found it not that much harder just more bouncy. I also experimented with going down some steep hills in my yard and did ok. so my plan tommorrw is to take the uni into some easy bike trails at the end of my street just to try out a bit of municycling.

also ive seen people say that they are a sertain level unicycler. So what are these different levels?

Welcome indeed to the forums. I remember when first learning and riding any distance I would curve as you say a bit and tended to hold an arm up in front of me and twist my body slightly to force the unicycle straight.
I still do this now if its windy or my balance is effected for any reason.
I think its just something that comes naturally without even realising, its a good idea to play around with your set up too. My seat height now is pretty low I can more or less stand directly over the uni, if i’d have tried to ride like that a year ago i’d have thought it impossible, though I still find going backwards difficult with a low seat.
Anyway keep at it and have fun. :sunglasses:

unibugg: thanks, I’m riding a schwin that my dad cought about 6 years ago.

bungalistic: I kinda had my curve under control if i leaned alittle more to the left… until… Today my peddal fell off. When it came off it stripped some of the threads so now the pedal is croked and so is my straight riding. im going to try and see what i can do to straighten the peddal tommorrow.

ps. i learned to ride about 100ft back when we first got the uni but i didn’t start riding again till tuesday. So i think that that explains so of my quick learning.

I’ve been off the unicycle for about a week b/c i was sick. But i got back on tonight and was better than ever. one problem i had was that i would have coughing fits and have to stop. also with my pedal being slatned i find that i am powering the other pedal more but im going to try and fix that tommorrow.

i did some muni riding today for the first time. It was a blast. I really need to get a better tire right now i just have a crumy street tire that clogs up with mud instantly. Also i learned the hard way you should ware gloves. I actually learned it a few times. Im thinking when i get my next uni i might step up to a 26 inch wheel. either that or just stick with a 24.

Take it to your LBS and see if they can streighten it, this will keep it from being damaged more and keep you from developing bad riding habits.

Edit: while you are there try to talk them into becoming a unicycle.com dealer so you can easily get good quality parts and new unis.
