Hello, I'm new to here and Unicycling...

Any younger unicyclists? Um… I’m 11. I got my unicycle on my birthday, which was 2 months ago. I started riding my unicycle to school today  it was fun! I’m trying to figure out how I can go backwards or hop on it. Anybody else around my age, or otherwise anybody have some advice? Thanks!

Re: Hello, I’m new to here and Unicycling…

welcome to the forum
i’m not sure about many people your age, i do know of several people who are factors of your age
i suspect a serious mathematical discussion could break out shortly
for advice on how to do different things, use the ‘search’ function at the bottom of the page
it will allow u to read entire threads on whatever subject u choose to search for

for riding backwards u want to be able to stop on the uni for just a moment
i dont know if u can idle yet
that is a nice first step
if u can idle, u can go the ‘super-idle’ route
instead of just doing half a pedal revolution forward and then back, u can try doing a full revolution of the pedals forward and then a full one back
as u become more proficient at this u can extend it to two revolutions forward and back and eventually go on to three and four
before u know it, u’ll be riding backwards

hopping on the uni is almost identical to hopping on a pogostick except that the hops are (at first) slightly smaller
if u mount your uni with support and stand up on the pedals, grab the seat and start hopping, u might find out that it’s quite a bit easier than u thought
for the finer technical aspects of hopping, u’ll have to ask some of the hop experts

Re: Hello, I’m new to here and Unicycling…

Welcome to the wonderful world of unicycling!

There are many unicyclists around 11 or even much younger. But very few of them are posting on these forums themselves. We know of them through their parents who post, or because they are members of clubs. Ben Edwards, now aged 12 I think, may be the youngest person who sometimes posts, occasionally.

You posted this question on the Just Conversation forum. It may draw some responses here but you might be better off posting it in the Rec.Sport.Unicycling forum. RSU is for all questions/comments/etc on the topic of unicycling, and it draws a wider audience. JC is for discussion about any topic, as diverse as flowers, bees or the war in Iraq.

Welcome,

My two girls both ride, age 6 & 11. The youngest learned at age 5, we currently have another 5 yr old that rides with our club.

My eldest is registered on RSU but hasn’t posted or followed the list yet.

When asking for advice you will get it or you may get referred to prior threads like this one about riding backwards. Lots of good information can be found with simple searches.

Here’s to many years of riding.

Thanks for the info, I’m glad I came here.
