hell on wheel video

hey guys

i just finished editing my experimental video. it is my first real editing experience and the project is kind of ambitious so it does look pretty amateur, though i AM happy with the results.

i put it to music by squarepusher, which is electronic and out there. if you arent into this type of music there is a good chance you wont like the song. nevertheless, in my opinion the riding is pretty good, and i hope it will be justly entertaining.

it is 2 minutes and 40 some seconds. the file is 16 MB and im sorry but will open in windows media player. i edited it with windows movie maker, which explains a portion of the suckiness (the rest being my inexperience in editing).

try to think about it like watching the wizard of oz while listening to dark side of the moon. while it really doesnt match up that well, there are enough coincidences to make it seem cool.

i sincerely hope you guys enjoy it.

awesome, i think u did a good job editing the video so it flowed with the music. personally i think that way out music is better than just the norm. if anyone has any complaints about background music, just mute it and enjoy the great riding! nice job trip, ill try to come down to D.C. and join you sometime. keep making more videos

fun video. I won’t be going out to buy the squarepusher CD, but it worked well with the fast editing and fast speed. That’s a refreshing way to show the riding, at superhuman speeds. I also liked the multiple showing of some of the moves.

Keep working on the vids. I look forward to your next one.

Bill

Hey Muniracer I was looking at your video and saw you jumping across these wooden structures. It looked like 2 by 4’s and 2 by 6’s. Could you tell me directions in making them? Thanks.
Kelly.

Kelly,

I haven’t been able to download the video yet so I’m not sure what obstacles they are but the tips at www.unicycle.2ya.com might be of some help. Go to the ‘Obstacle Building’ section.

Andrew

Those are the Gapping Bars found on the site Andrew posted.

I liked the movie, it was very different than most with the speeding up/slowing down. It went well with the music, too.

Movie

Yo, Nice Movie. We’re making one as well. Titled Hazard. If you ever come out with another little movie. Hook me up. Laters

there are some pics of the gapping bars here http://gallery.unicyclist.com/album162

but follow andrew’s instructions, because the bars i have are pretty crappy and falling apart.

Hey muniracer did you use 2 by 4’s or 2 by 6’s?

Fantastic vid muniracer, love the music and the editing suited it really well. That hop on the spot was huge!!! Keep up the good, nay, great work!

very cool video. The music goes so well with the choppy editing. I absolutly love the music, ill have to chech squarpusher out.

sorry juggle, they are 2x6s. for each bar, you need to cut 1 6x30, 2 6x20s, and 4 6x12s. the construction is easy to see here- http://gallery.unicyclist.com/album162/Picture_019

the bars are great fun!

thanks for the comments guys.

Trip,

I noticed that you hop the same way I do: left foot back, and to the left. When you pedal grab, you bring the right pedal forwards, and go up normally. I tried this, and it didn’t work. I do the ‘crankflip.’ (bring the right pedal up in the back, then when going up you flip the cranks and land in the right position)

I’d rather do it without the crankflip, though, for more accurate landings. do you have any tips for bringing the right pedal up in front?

Great Video. I felt like the sequence with the three concrete columns and the ledge got a tiny bit old, but it was still great. I like the music. I liked how you sped through the bunches of hops, and just got to the good parts.

I’m curious, it looked like a bunch of the stuff you were pedalgrabbing was around 2’ or less. You easily aired those concrete poles, so why didn’t you air the stuff with the pallettes or the logs? Was it actually much more precise than it looked or something? I was also waiting for you to jump over that fence near the three columns. I imagine it’s quite do-able. Great riding, though. Also, that hop you do in the middle of the movie was huge! Finally, was that your own course?

Potter: I’m telling you, it’s quite possible to be precise with the style of pedalgrabs you’re currently using. Mike middleton has done the tops of 4x4s with it! Developing that style will be easier and quicker than learning the other way. Also, your way just looks 5x as cool!

I’m planning on making my own video sometime soon, and I was wondering what freeware programs therte are out there that I could use to edit it. I have a pc and a mac, so computer’s not an issue.

the pallete hops are 2’ on the mark… that footage was made just after taking a few weeks break from riding, so my hop is not what it once was, and therefore had to use the pedal grab. the project was one of those late night things where there is not much else to do so i had limited footage. in fact, 90% of the footage was just stuff that was already in the hell on wheel gallery.

the break i took was not the right thing to do, which i can see at this point. i thought it might reinvigorate my interest in riding but it only put me back a lot. all the footage was taken since i had slowed down my riding, and is nowhere near what it was during my peak. i certianly hope to get back into a steady practice routine once i get back to school but it looks as if the summer was just a setback. i highly suggest never taking a break and practicing consistantly.

i edited the software with windows movie maker, which is the twin to imovie. better software takes a while to figure out, so i hear, and windows mm and imovie do a decent job for a simple video.

oh yeah, i didnt hop the fence because another gang member was yelled at for doing just that. its a nice place to ride and we dont want to lose it.

james: the only tip i have is to bring the free pedal (the one not grabbing) higher than the other. for me it is almost at a 45 degree angle above the horizaontal position. this way you dont have to jump high at all and you can set the pedals back to horizontal in the air. also, make sure to jump with your knees as you pull it up. the timing takes practice but you can get it. this is the method i have found to be most accurate.

hopefully that coers everything

Yeah, my way definitely looks cooler. (-: But it seems like turning the wheel in the air would make it harder to control. Well, if Mike Middleton does it on to 4x4’s with it, then it must be pretty good!
I think I’ll still see if I can do it the ‘normal’ way, but I just might stick with the crankflip.
Thanks!

james potter, i made a little video just for you

http://gallery.unicyclist.com/album289
(2mb, windows media player)

it has a pedal grab during a line, and then a close up in normal and slow motion so you can see how i do it, at least.

i can do it pretty accurately, the smallest thing i have tried to go to rubber on is a 2x6 board, and it was no problem.

good luck

Wow, all for me! thanks, it helped mucho!

I tried it today, and could make it some of the time. I’m having a bit of trouble keeping the pedals level, but other than that it’s working well. And after remembering to pull the seat up/bend my knees, it became much easier.

Well, I know this isn’t exactly the right thread to mention this in, but on the topic of atrophe, I know exactly what you mean. I basically have watched helplessly as my hopping height has dropped from30" to 28", and refused to rise again. I’ve since given up and decided to focus on more precision in moves. Yesterday I pedalgrabbed to the top of a 2’ high 4x4 multiple times (I finally broke the mental barrier). Then, I used an 11" 4x4 to make a small precision line. Basically, it goes: 11" to rubber on 4x4, then pedalgrab 2’ high 6x8, and then gap 3’ to post. I’ve decided to keep up with the tiny stuff like that, since that’s what interests me now. Eventually I’ll get back to big hops, but not for a while. I’m also working on hops into skinny rides and vice versa. Yesterday I did a 3 meter ride on the thin edge of a 2x4 and at the end I took the seat out pedalgrabbed 13" to the top of my 6x8. those lines have been lots of fun, and less frustrating than big hops. Not to mention, it takes much longer for me to lose my precision than my hopping height.

Also, I’m surprised! You used to be able to do 30" without a prehop! 33" with! So how’d you deteriorate back down to <24" in less than a month?! I tend to bottom out at 27", although yesterday I was tucking the seat up a little more than I wanted for a 22" hop onto a 6x8.

Edit: Potter: Anyone who can pedalgrab the top of anything smaller than an 8x8 is pretty good.

cool video, i loved the slowing bits up and down and reapeating them, especially the part on the parralel bars, it worked well with the music, which i also liked…very different to the normal skate style vid with punk rock/nu metal track.
I quite like squarepusher now, my friend played me some stuff today which is the first time ive heard of them, and then i come online to find more SP listeners and hear more of them.
