headphones

Just wondering what kinda headphones you use. I have a pair with the rubber earpieces that totally close out all outside sound and I don’t really like that too much (I want to hear when cars are coming). Looking for some that don’t fall out either. Anyone got a pair they are happy with?

I’ve got Sennheiser HD 280 pro with a BitHead Headroom pre-amp. They’re sealed headphones too and give you amazing sound. I don’t usually wear them on the streets, but when I do, I prefer not to hear cars.

For streets I use a pair of cheap Koss headphones. They’ve got decent sound, but aren’t sealed which I think makes me turn them up a bit more than I should.

Btw, if you search the forums there are about a thousand and one headphone threads already.

p.s. What country is WA?

WA is the state of washington in USA, where Seattle is.
And no I don’t know anything about headphones

I’ve got a set of Sennheiser HD 212Pro headphones and really like them. Sound is great with a really ample bass- great for me because i’m into dubstep. I Paid $100AU for mine and use them mainly with my ipod or through my Klipsch promedia GMX 2.1 computer speaker system. I highly recommend them. Here is a link for a review of them. Will explain them much better than i ever could.

I like the earplug headphones because the music sounds like it’s louder even when it isn’t, so I don’t have to turn the volume up when someone else turns on the TV or something.

The sealed earmuff headphones are good too.

If you want to hear outside sounds, then just a cheap pair of behind the neck headphones are fine, but like ivan said, you’ll find yourself turning the volume up.

Check the sound quality before you buy them, if possible.

Headphones. My second favorite topic besides unicycles. d:)b

I don’t like the in-ear phones either. They’re a bother to put in your ear and get the right seal and they feel funny once they’re in.

For portable use I usually use the
http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-PX-100-Collapsible-Headphones/dp/B000089GN3/
. Good sound quality. They fold up and fit in a case so I can thrown them in my pack and not worry about breaking them. But if you’re wearing a helmet they’re not going to work.

There are clip-on phones like the
http://www.amazon.com/Koss-KSC75-Portable-Stereophone-Headphones/dp/B0006B486K/
. They’ll work with helmets and hats. They have a reputation for sound quality above their price.

There are also various behind the neck style headphones. The Grado iGrado is nice, but a little on the large side if you’re using them while being active.

edit: bah! When did the forum start expanding Amazon links into pictures? I’m too lazy to change the links to stop that nonsense.

That’s exactly what I have! They do have a very good sound quality for their price, however after a couple of months the left headphone started buzzing a bit. It’s not too noticeable and the buzz comes and goes, so it’s fine. Also, unless you press them against your ear somehow, most of the bass is lost, but that’s a problem for all of the clip-on phones, I think.

Also, the clip falls out sometimes, but that’s only because I damaged it. And it’s easy to put back in.

Overall, great headphones that I got for ridiculously low price.

With clip on headphones like the Koss you do need something to press them against the ears for best sound. True of any on-ear style clip on. I’ve seen some people wear a sweat band, the thin kind that is designed to be able to be worn under a bicycle helmet, over the ears to hold the Koss headphones in place and against the ears. That’s an option. But would look a bit odd.

Sennheiser also makes a behind the neck PMX 100 which seems to have the same drivers as the over the head PX 100. I’ve never tried it so I don’t know how they fit. The behind the neck band should squeeze them against the ears to keep them sounding proper. Helmet straps may get in the way of the neck band.

Sony and JVC and others make a variety of clip ons that are more like earbud earphones. I have no idea how they sound. Probably like earbuds. The Koss and the PX 100 are going to sound better than the typical under $50 earbud.

Another option is to wear a hat like this - Chullo - Wikipedia

Works wonders in the winter.

I really would suggest the Sennheiser PMX70 or PMX80 headphones, they are excellent.
They stay solidly in your ears whatever you’re doing, they’re comfortable, have good quality audio and have style

Thanks for the info, I was out and saw a pair of sony sport earbuds, the kind that have the clip thing that goes behind your ear… WHAT A BUNCH OF GARBAGE! They would not even stay in my ear, the clip thing keeps the eearphone from going in your ear so sounds quality sucks. But I guess the one positive was I could still hear traffic

So I just ordered a pair of sennheiser pmx100s, I think this will be a much better solution.

I have a set of those Green Sennheiser phones and I don’t like them. Comfort is only OK, and sound quality in my opinion is not very good. If you like to hear some bass in your music these are not the phones to get. But you can hear plenty of outside sound with them.

I have read almost nothing but good reviews about the Koss KSC 75 but haven’t tried them myself.

sennheiser pmx100s are the answer! Just got back in from riding with them, they sound great, they are super comfortable, they work with my helmet, and I can still hear outside noise. Very happy!

Late to this discussion, but love my Sennheisers. I got the MX75’s for running and they are awesome.

They stay in, fit well (come with 4 different sizes of ear pads), and sound AWESOME.

In short, you made the right choice.

If it ain’t broke, why fix it?

I kick it old school.

Whoops. Not that old school.

There we go.

my favorite inexpensive headphones are
these:
http://www.skullcandy.com/shop/configable/index/links/id/1061/cid/6/

they stay in great, come with 3 different size inserts, and are comfortable enough to wear all day.
the bass response is really good and i use them for in-ear monitoring for live performance regularly. skullcandy also makes some other very sweet headphones

and i love their guarantee, especially for my more expensive stuff:

Aggressive Listening Discount: All Skullcandy products that fail due to “aggressive listening”–that is, if Skullcandy products fail or break due to a crazy crash on the mountain or a violent head-banging session… or any other reason that is not a product defect, we will still hook you up! The MX75 are still earbuds. I’ve never yet heard an earbud that was any good for real music listening. The design of earbuds just doesn’t allow for good sound. They all roll off the bass and roll off the highs. Midrange is never clear and clean. There is nothing good about them other than they are convenient and a reasonable choice if you are out running. But don’t use them for actual music listening when music listening is the primary activity.

The PX100 and PMX100 are real headphones and make for some good listening. Get yourself something like the PX100 for portable listening when you aren’t out running. They actually are AWESOME and can be run directly from a portable player.

I’m real amazed at how comfortable they (Senn pmx100) are and how well they stay on. I was wearing em out in the garage for a couple of hours tonight and it was like not having anything on my head, they never got in the way, fell off or anything. Today it’s a rare thing to end up with a product that not only meets, but exceeds your expectations, there is so much garbage out there. These are awesome.

I have to disagree with you there; I don’t really like those headphones much (I own a pair).
They always used to fall out when I was riding, and it feels like you have a cork rammed in your ear. Sound quality I think was inferior to other earphones.
The guarantee was good though! Mine broke after a month to some unknown cause (cough, unicycling, cough) and they refunded me cause it was a supposed fault with the earphones
Who knows, could’ve been.

My recommendation: Sadly, the original iPod headphones!
They’re quite comfortable, nice sound quality but could have a bit more bass.
And i’ve broken them multiple times, but after a quick superglue job they still work perfectly!

But for a sound-filled techno rave in the privacy of my own room, definitely the huge earmuff-style ones. mmmmm.

The Apple earbuds are not good sound at all. They have no bass and no highs. The mids are all muddy like the Mississippi Delta. There is no clarity. I keep the earbuds that came with my iPod Classic just so I have a reference for what bad sounds like.

The in-ear style earphones require some special technique to insert them properly. You need to give them a reach-around as you insert them. Reach around the back of your head with your right hand and grab the top of your left ear. Pull the top of your left ear up. That opens up and straightens the ear canal opening so you can get the earphone in the ear with a proper seal. Insert the earphone with a twisting motion. Then adjust the angle of it in the ear. Careful adjustment of the angle can make a big difference in sound. Etymotic has a video showing how it’s done.

I don’t like in-ear earphones either. They feel weird and are a hassle to put in and take out. You can get custom molded earphones that fit like hearing aids. Those are more comfortable and easier to insert and remove. But they are also expensive.

Full size headphones are where the good sound is. I’m listening to Denon AH-D2000 headphones right now. They can give you a headphone rave experience if that’s what you want (you’ll have to play with EQ a bit). But no headphone can give you the visceral bass feel you get from full size concert or club speakers. That just can’t happen with headphones unless you add an external sub-woofer.
